vista won't start

vista won't start up. goes throught to microsoft thing, then goes to grey screen and stays there for about 45 minutes then starts the disk light is on all the time. tried formatting disk and reloading vista but the same thing has happened again. getting a bit frustrating now, any help will be appreciated. thanks

Will you post your system specs and please be more specific about the issue you're experiencing.


If it's crashing then re-starting, in safe mode enable this so you can get the error before it re-starts., see the snip below.

sorry for being a bit vague
The computer is a HP pavilion dv 9700 laptop
op system Vista Premium V6 with service pack 1
when I roboot the computer goes through bios ok then goes to the screen where it has the box with microsoft sign it stays there for about a minute then goes to a grey screen which is blank then it stays there for about 45 minutes. The disk light stays on continuously so it is doing something. Then it starts up and works ok till I reboot again then the same thing happens. The only proramms loaded are office 2007 and a virus checker bit defender.
It starts up ok in safe mode.
Have tried start-up repair
tried format and reinstal of vista
tried disableing startup items and disabling services. done chcdisk.
I think it is one of the updates from microsoft but don't know which one.

hi again I fixed my problem. silly me thought that vista had downloaded and installed all the updates but was looking for a fix and saw a few people mention a service pack 2 for vista so downloaded and installed and now computer back to starting properly. I won't take anything for granted again.
