Vista x64 SATA Burner issues

I have two SATA burners installed with Vista x64, they burn fine but burst rate is only 14 mb/s when it was 60 mb/s on XP Pro

Does anyone know what driver I might have installed that I shouldn't have or need to install?

This is a Asus P5K Deluxe P35 chipset board.

the first thing I'd check is if there is a firmware update for your drives...

Drives have the latest firmware that I sure of.

I am still running 0404 bios because it is stable, may try 0705, not sure what I am going to do.

Well I tried putting the DVd drive on all the different ports and still I am only getting 30 mb/s (sorry said 14 mb/s before).

This is not right, I am thinking it is a driver problem.

Anyone with a P5k Deluxe and a SATA burner want to try something for me?

Download CDspeed (it's free and no install needed) Nero CD-DVD Speed website

Then put in a already burned DVD, select your drive in the drop down list, click "Run Test" and select "Burst Rate", it only takes a few second.

I really would appreciate it.

Then list what drive and what what motherboard BIOS you are using.

edit: I have tried this drive in Vista x86 and get 60 mb/s so I know it's Vista x64 related and really think it's driver related at this point.

I did flash to 0705 and while no problems it didn't fix it

Anyone using a SATA PCI card with Vista x64 support?

Well I still have the problem, checked my "2" IDE drives and they are also maxing out at 30 mb/s and this is not right.

I have tried new cables and different SATA ports, still nothing.

I think I have it narrowed down to something I have installed, I will be gone for a few days so I won't start uninstalling programs yet.

Only programs I can think of that access the Burners are AnyDVD, Nero and PowerDVD.

If anyone else has the same motherboard and Vista x64 and would take 10 mins to run the test in post #4 I would appreciate it.

Did you include the SATA drivers during Vista install? If you don't change the BIOS options, most mobos will use IDE emulation for SATA drives (much slower, but it doesn't require driver installs during vista setup).

My GA-G33M-DS2R Gigabyte mobo was like that- I had to change it from "IDE" to "ACPI" For SATA mode in the BIOS.

If you're up and running, and you didn't install the SATA driver from the CD or on ASUS site by pressing F6 during vista setup (and subsequent loading via floppy/cd/dvd/flash memory), you're probably in the IDE emu mode. It made a huge difference for me.

edit: Just thinking though why would my DVd drives on my IDE controller also be lower speed?

I don't know. The generic IDE driver isn't great, and there's probably a limit to the amount of activity it can process...between your HD and your DVD drives, maybe?

It's better to have AHCI anyways- I get much faster speeds, the drives can be "hot swapped" (more of a convenience thing with eSATA or slave drives that you're not using), Native Command Queuing can work, etc.

Well I successfully went to AHCI mode with no problems using the registry edit but still stuck at 30 mb/s

Hmmm...that's odd. Maybe it IS the x64 driver. Are we talking about one program here, or multiple, getting these lower speeds?

Vista SP1 may alleviate some cd speed issues, or so I've read.

Yeah using cdspeed burst rate it's accurate.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD ripping is also SLOW, that's how I first knew it was wrong.

lol mines on 39 mb/s..but got a pretty crappy drive...bios 805 with P5k...i see u got the deluxe..

Well I formated and reinstalled over the weekend and everything is fine now, I get 60 mb/s with my Samsung 203N and LG GGC-H20LI.

I have the Samsung hooked up to a THIS CARD and it works very well, it's only SATA I so I wouldn't use it with a hard drive but seems to work great with Optical Disk Drives.

So I think it was some Virtual Drive program I had installed that may not have uninstalled properly while I was looking for a replacement for Virtual Clonedrive.
