Weird Error

Hello, This morning i got an email from a employee telling me that his computer hard drive has crashed and when he boots into Windows Vista on normal startup the whole system freezes. However everything seems to works great in safe mode. He also told me he had ran the disk self check and gotten the error "Short DST FAILED"This is a pretty known error which in most cases makes the user unable to boot into Windows AT ALL.This is a HP Elitebook 6930p (Brand new) only a few weeks old. I couldnt figure out how the heck the disk can crash that fast. When i got my hands on the laptop the first thing i tried was to boot into Vista. It seemed ok, no problem at all. I could browse web pages etc, write some documents in office and save. Nothing seemes corrupt. After about 10 minutes the desktop turned gray (as it was not answering) Then the screen turned black, and nothing was functioning (Not even ctrl+alt+del). Funny enough the mouse pointer was still functioning. I decided to run chkdsk /r since disk errors like bad sectors are fixed with this command. When this check was done I booted into Windows Vista with no problems as before, but this time (after 6 hours) it has still not crashed or hung up. BUT when i run the Disk Self Test (SHORT DST) I still get the message "SHORT DST FAILED" Even though i can boot and everything is functioning. No bsods no nothing everything is working perfect. SO why do i get this error on disk diagnostics? (Im scratching my head) :P
