Solved When Laptop's Idle For Extended Time

If you don't use your laptop much, if it's going to see no use for more than a day, maybe several days, should you shut it down or is it okay to just close the lid. Turns out my father won't be using his Asus Notebook much as he bought it for the sole purpose of navigating a site that once, but no longer (I had to break the news to him. ), required IE. (I recommended that he use Boot Camp or a virtual program on his Macbook Pro before the site became Mac friendly but he didn't listen.)

This has been an argument that has been going on for years. There is no harm to the computer if it is not used but
If you shut if down, you are sure you will not get a virus while not in use. You do not have to surf to get a virus.
You will save on elec bills and there will be no extra, although very, very small wear on the hard drive. The hard drive wear is that is prevented is cancelled by the extra wear by booting.
Personally, I leave mine on unless: I am going out or there is a thunder storm.

Yes it works the same way. I have a desktop.

Sleep uses battery power/electricity to keep programs (and the OS) running in memory. Personally I put my system to sleep at night and when at work as well as utilize the timeout option. If I where him and barely turning it on I would shut it down when not needed.
