Always been nVidia, but nowadays, I don't notice a difference since I stopped gaming. Never had a real issue with ATI, other than the old school driver issues, so I really don't have a preference now, as long as it works.
All of my Desktops were built with nVidia's, the one desktop I have left now has an old ATI card, and my laptop uses ATI. They all work just fine.

BTW this is actually backwards. ATI is more efficient. Look at any of the fermi reviews. Most ATI Cards kill Nvidia. Also ATI/AMD cards are better costing.

BUT Nvidia makes the most powerful single gpu card, and usually has been.

And BTW part 2.

Powdercolor and Saphire make ATI cards, MSI and Asus make both Nvidia and ATI/AMD.

That said, I'm a folder, so I go Nvidia, my prefered brand was XFX, but the dropped out of the fermi cards, so Evga is my choice.

i hear ya i was just naming all the brands. PLUS your right ati is less costly than nvidia but i have also been looking at reviews and here is what i found:

Nvidia 53%
ATI 30%
Intel: 10%
Other: 7% E.G SIS and others

i got this info from sites on google. Also currently Nvidia is the most used card by steam users and GPU-z users.

Well one big skewed data is Nvidia does extremely well at folding at home, and user buy them up crazy like.

I'm of the attitude that there are cards in each brand that are better at certain prices.

Name a price level, i'll name a different card.

Okay, perusing Graphic Cards at Computer Store for prices, and not sure if you're including gst... Sucks don't it.

My biggest suggestion is save abit more, and get a ati 5750 which is/was $179 on the site. But thats excluding gst.
Asus ATI EAH5750 FORMULA PCI-E 2.1 1GB 128-bit GDDR5, 700-4600 MHz, DVI, HDMI, D-Sub, DX11, Fan, Xtreme Design (EAH5750-FML-2DI-1GD5) at Computer Store.

If you can't, the the Palit gts 250 from Nvidia for $152 is the choice.

Its cheaper because its not factory overclocked. NEVER pay for a factory overclocked card as all cards will easy oc to there and further.

The 5750 is a bit better AND is dx11, which is the newest standard. The gts 250 is a rebadged 9800gts+

So in conclusion...... The 5750 is youre best option, and as you know more shops than I can find, you may beable to afford it. If not, the gts 250 is your choice, and your psu is just fine for either.

If you have a shop you use and they have a online shop, link it and i'll take a peak.

Like I said... Nvida and ATI have kings in different price ranges. BOTH make superior cards, and I personally would use both, based off the budgets.

Now, folding at home is a distributed computing app run by Stanford university. Theyre investigating how proteins and genes in the body "fold" to develop into different things. Some of theses are good, others are bad like Alhemerzer and other cancers.
Like SETI, they rely on average folks to do the number crunching. They have va cpu app and a gpu app that'll do the crunching, and due to the programming, Nvidia cards scream threw the math. ATI cards aren't as efficient.. again due to the programming NOT the cards quality or power.

you forgot to mention the "at home" bit.

all the above is correct as patonb has said but you download a program which runs in the background on your home PC and it uses a small amount of your GPU's processing power to number crunch and send the data to Stanford Uni :-)

Missing alot of brands there, but why would you support any brand over another? Neither care about your loyality they care about the bottom dollar, and thats it.

I started out with my first real graphics card as a Radeon 7200 64mb DDR card, then got an Nvidia ti-4200, followed that with a Radeon 9700Pro, that got replaced by a 6800GT, which was replaced by a 7950Gt, then replaced by an HD 3870, and now a GTX 275. Go with what is best price/preformance in your price range, forget ATI/Nvidia the way you think about it.

As for brand loyalty outside of the maker of the GPU, I usally stick to Saphire for ATI cards, and EVGA for Nvidia cards, and if you where to come into my shop you'd find both Saphire and EVGA cards.

True, i did miss out on alot of brands but i was only naming the ones BIG in new zealand.


also low end ati cards seem to be cheaper than low end nvidia cards.

Yha, ATI has the more affordable models at the lower end.

But both have winning cards at certain prices.
