Solved Windows 7 laptop won't startup or shutdown

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. This morning when I tried start-up all I got was the home-screen with my wallpaper and none of my icons.I tried starting in safe mode but nothing happens although I know something is running because the hourglass figure is there. I can't shut down from menu and must use the power button. Nothing new was installed and I have Kaspersky AV running at all times so I can't have a virus. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks:cry:

Actually you could have a virus. An antivirus is not a guarantee.
That being said, is all your stuff backed up?

No I have not backed up to an external drive but do have system recovery discs which I have not used. I have never tried using this type of recovery before and am somewhat uncertain if they will mess up my computer.

I tried booting up with command prompt and using sfc/scannow but it does nothing.

OK
This post will show you how to use the recovery CD. We will be here to help, but we cannot prevent you from losing your stuff.
Create a system repair disc
In addition, you may have a hardware problem like a corrupt hard drive. The CD cannot fix hardware problems.

I have started using the recovery media (5 discs) that were made for me at the shop where I bought the laptop. It is a long process and will restore to factory defaults. Lost files are not important as I do most important stuff on desktop computer. I had photos but they are all backed up in Picassa & Google. Tomorrow I will start restoring programs I had on the laptop...first getting the two FF based browsers I use to be downloaded from IE (which I will not use again after!)
My next purchase when this laptop dies will be a Mac. Windows has too many problems:rolleyes:

If you are restoring to factory defaults you will lose all of your stuff. In addition, you will have to install all of the updates, reinstall your software and lose access to pics and other documents
