OK, i have this problem, when i put a dvd (any dvd) into either dvd drive i get the following message :

"Windows cannot access this disc. The disc might be corrupt. Make sure the disc uses a format that windows recognises. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using it."

My OS Is Vista Ultimate x64
My dvd drives are according to vista:
Lite-on dvdrw shm-165p6s scsi cdrom device
TSSTcorp DVD_rom SH-D162D scsi cdrom device

Problem 1 - is that the drives are actually ide and not scsi
Problem 2 - doesnt matter what disc i put in neither of them can read it
Problem 3 - its definatly vista an not hardware as both drives work perfect in same machine with windows 7 instalation

Ive had this problem twice before and its due to an update windows installs... but which one?? It always happens during the instalation of sp1 or within days after it. The last time it happened was at my last install of vista x64, sep 2008. I think i got the KB number from this site but i cant find the right one to uninstall.

does anyone know which KB update i should uninstall please? ive spent 4 hours looking through masses of google results to no result. Someone surely has had the same issue please???

Ive already uninstalled KB943899 but that didnt fix it.

cheers

Spooky!!!! i must say , never came up with this issue as yet. All i can say is try running a system restore. You can also check the recent windows updates which have been installed before the issue started and take them off.

Cheers, the only problem with that is i cannot be certain when the problem started so therefor i would need to uninstall every update there has been since the original vista x64 install. Like i said, there is a KB number which installs either in SP1 or a subscequent update that screws up the dvd drives - its done it twice before and it has done it again. Each time is when ive reinstalled vista x64. Its just a case of removing that particular KB update and my drives start working perfectly again.

I need to know the KB number for the problem - surely i am not alone on this matter as i have twice before found the solution (the last time i think i may have found it on this site).

Thanks

hmm,

Did as you advised and i get the following error:

"REGISTRY EDITOR

CANNOT IMPORT new.reg: the specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor."

dunno what i did wrong but it didnt work.... ill look elsewhere to see if i can get the KB number i need.

Thanks again
