Windows can't check for updates (pls help!!!)

I have searched through many threads and I have been unable to find an answer.

My windows update is unable to check for updates, an whenever I manually check for updates, Install now shows up, once the installation process begins, a couple of minutes go by and windows returns to checking for updates, and I am right back to Check for updates for your computer.

I've checked the history, and so far KB948610 has failed 4 times, and KB953733 once in the past (windows apparently never tried again).

Has anybody have a clue how I can resolve this???

Hi There,
I had a similiar problem and one of the threads recommended this
Go to Network and Sharing Centre in Control Panel, once in here locate where your connected at (Linksys, Netgear...etc) to the right it should say View Status click Properties it will prompt you to confirm privilages push continue, while in Networking Tab locate Internet Protocol Ver. 4 highlight and to the right click Properties set preferred DNS to 4.2.2.2. and alternative DNS to 4.2.2.3 and it should work

as far as malware programs go, i've run CCleaner and registrybooster2, as well as I have shawsecure(a very reliable ISP based virus/spyware detection and removal program along with firewall) I have of course disabled my windows firewall(is that a mistake?) to avoid any conflicts between firewalls

Just to be on the safe side try Malwarebytes, preferably from safe mode. In addition, try either Spybot S&D or SUPERAntiSpyware (in these two cases, make sure not to install anything memory resident, e.g. TeaTimer, as it may interfere with your ordinary AV program). Also test the Vista Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Could the use of registry booster in any way be related to your problem, and in such case, does it make any registry backups? Same question for Ccleaner and would you have a backup from a registry cleaning then?

Edit: If the antimalware programs find nothing, check in Control Panel - Programs - Programs and Features if you have an entry Microsoft .Net Framework and post here the version it is. Also let us know if other security updates installs OK from Windows Update or if these two are the only ones that fails.

Search for msconfig, right click and run as administrator. On the Services tab, make sure Windows Update is ticked. Otherwise tick it, click apply and OK, and reboot. Then search for Services. Run it as administrator and look for Windows Update. Its status should be "Started" and "Startup type" should be Automatic (Delayed start). If not double click and set the startup type to this value and start the service. Reboot and check this again. When running as it should, try windows update again.

I've got some full registry backups from each registrybooster and ccleaner, but the problems themselves originated before (basically ran those programs to correct the issue). I've seen my system performance dramatically increase (web browsing and app loading especially)since ive ran these and the removed files were usually ancient progam tracer(like VAIO startup agent and things of the sort ive already removed when i purchased the laptop).

As far as .NET framework, It's not part of my programs and I've downloaded it and tried to run it, but it will not install. I ran the install overnight and once again, it does not install with a 800b0100 error code.

I've found the graph with what that means and it would be an unsecured signature. I tried to re-register my WU, but that does not seem to fix it.

Is Windows Update configured as it should in Msconfig and Services? Have you tested the advices for Virus scans?

If you do not have .net installed, the KB948610 would not be needed, neither would any of these, which I got at the same time: 948609, 958448, 953595, 958481 and 958383. Are those installed?

948609 installed no problem, but i dont see any of the other ones. Now I was actually thinking its uneeded, as framework isnt on my system, but it was just the fact WU tried installing it 4 times that made me question. Im not sure what you mean when it comes to the configuration of Windows update in Msconfig and Services, could you explain??

Hello Jeddess
That was exactly my problem and nothing else I tried worked except for correcting the DNS configerations once I changed them I had no problems with updates

further to my earlier reply I recall reading in one of the threads that error 'can't search for updates' could also be an ActiveX problem, it suggested -
Go to Control Panel, Network & Internet, Security Tab and set Security level to Custom, adjust all ActiveX to -
ActiveX Controls & Plug-ins "Enable"
Automatic Prompting for ActiveX Controls "Enable"
Download Signed ActiveX Controls "Prompt"
Run ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins "Enable"
Hopes this helps

thanks gran, I've found the last three on your list(for the first one, in only saw "allow previously unused activeX control to run without prompt") I did take your advice with the DNS settings(system accepted them and I is providing me w/internet connection), but I'll restart to see if there is any difference changing activex settings

I am not sure .NET is part of original Vista, but it surely is of SP1. Have you installed SP1, otherwise you may want to do that. If you do not make backups, this may be the time to start.

Press the start flag and type msconfig. You should get msconfig.exe as a hit. If you search for services you should find Services. I would think this would work for home premium.
Edit: Before doing this, I recommend to go into Windows Update and make sure it is set to either install automatically or check and choose.

Okay, so checking through my msconfig, I've been able to find .NET 2.0 NGEN x86 installed but listed as stopped. Windows update is in fact in that list and it is setup to have updates install automatically. SP1 came with the laptop when I purchased it, so I never needed to install it. WU shows up in services as well, with a delayed start. I make sure to keep my first back ups as full when I first run a program, and reverting those changes doesn't seem to make any difference. Is there any way to manually restart some of those (as framework is not the only program that is set to stopped )???

Do not worry about Framework and other process. They will start when needed. The important ones are WU and Background Intelligent Transfer Service, which both should be Automatic(Delayed start) and Started.
