Windows can't check for updates

i am posting this query for my daughter who is even less computer literate than me. When she turns on the computer she gets a message saying 'windows can't check for updates' and this has been going on for some weeks and when she opens the update centre and trys to download the updates it fails and shows this error code: 80072EFD.

She also get a mesage that her current windows defender is out of date. i tried to download defender again from microsoft download centre but message pops up 'defender is included in vista package' so can't download.

At start up she also get a message saying BHO.DLL and IE3ShSH application stopped working.

Any help would be appreciated.

she has vista home basic and the machine is 32 bit.

Windows Defender is build-in Vista and unable uninstall/install it.You can only update manually Windows Defender How to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender
but first solve first one error,surly both problems are related

Run this tool http://www.malwarebytes.org/

next prepare logs MAIN and EXTRA from OTL http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
(leave default settings).Logs attache to post.
