Windows Explorer crashes when opening a file

I have a file on my desktop folder where I keep anything that I've downloaded. its a pretty hefty file but its never caused any problems for me until now. when I open it, I have about 5 seconds before a message box appears that says "windows explorer has stopped working" and it has to restart, closing any explorer windows. no other file does this and it only just started the other day. I haven't downloaded anything recently that could cause this. I've tried deleting it but I have to permanently delete the entire folder because it's too big for the recycle bin. I don' want to delete it in case I delete something that I would prefer to keep, and I can't move anything out of it because it crashes before I can C+P or move the file. Any help would be appreciated
