Solved Windows Explorer "Open each folder in same window" no longer working

I use Windows Explorer numerous times every day. I like to navigate to folders using the folders pane and click on items in main view. I sometimes drill down to folders in the main view to finish my navigation until I'm at the folder I wish to see.

All of the sudden I'm finding that when I click on a folder in the main view, a new Explorer window pops up. I did not change any of my preferences in this regard. I went into the Tools-->Folder Options and saw that "Open each folder in the same window" was still selected, as I'd left it long ago (a couple of years now). So, I switched the radio button to the "Open new folder" option, then switched it back to opening the folders in the same view. I clicked "Apply" and closed Explorer (I did this as a kind of "forced" reset). Then I opened Explorer again, and it's still not obeying this setting.

What's going on? Is this influenced by some other settings location I haven't looked at yet?


AFAIK, this started not long after I had uninstalled IE9 and IE8, rolling back to IE7, then installed IE9 again. I did this to resolve a peculiar issue with certain files marked as corrupt in SFC scannow (turns out it's a defect when going to IE9 from IE8). I do realize that Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer share a lot of the same files. But this is functionality exclusive to Windows Explorer. Really strange...

Thanks for the suggestion, but... luckily I didn't need to do that. I rebooted my computer and when it finished restarting, Windows Explorer started to behave normally again. I guess the "reset" I did needed a complete system restart rather than just closing and opening Windows Explorer. :)
