Windows Media Center - Restore or Remove from Default Programs

How to Restore or Remove Windows Media Center from Default Programs

information   Information
This will show you how to either restore or remove Windows Media Center from the Set Default Programslist for all users in Vista and Windows 7.
Note   Note
The N and KN editions of Windows 7 have all the features that normally come with each individual Windows 7 edition, except for Windows Media Player 12 and related programs, such as Windows Media Center or Windows DVD Maker.

The N editions of Windows 7 allow you to choose your own media player and software required to manage and play CDs, DVDs, and other digital media files. If you choose to use Windows Media Player 12, downloading it, along with related software, is free.

Hello Zosotino, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Be sure you click on the "Classic View" link in the Control Panel to see Default Programs.

Which part exactly is not there for you though?

Zosotino,

If it has not been to long ago, you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated when it was listed to see if it can fix it for you.

I imagine that when deselecting "Windows Media Center", all it does is avoid loading any services that might be associated with it and not uninstall anything from your system. I had noticed there was a media center process running on my system when I had no wish to use it. I do use Media Player from time to time, though. This should run independently of Media Center, correct?

Hello Gary,

Deselecting "Windows Media Center" will also prevent it from being able to be run by users. It will have no affect on "Windows Media Player" unless you deselect "Windows Media Player" as well.
