windows media player won't play videos.

hi all you good and knowledgable people can you help?,i use real player for downloading but when i change my default settings for windows media player to play back what iv'e downloaded it won't have it,because i downloaded with realplayer is this the reason why?,when i try w. m .p.it says the selected file has an extention not recognized by w.m.p.(.flv),then it says it may not recognize the codec that was used to compress the file i'm a little bit lost on all of it,can anybody help,:confused:many thanks in advance for any advice cheers L.W. ps i'm on windows vista basic 64 bit.

Sounds like you need a codec for the video file to play.

Download a codec package or the individual codec needed to play the video.
