Windows Update error code 80070490 appeared on 20 September 2013 and message "Windows can't check for updates". I use Windows Vista Home basic 32 bit, Service Pack 2. I tried almost all suggestions in Internet (including these on Microsoft Web-page) about this how to fix this problem, including Microsoft Fix It, System Update Readiness Tool, Windows Update Diagnostics DIAGCAB file and etc., but the message continue to appear. The last successful update was on 13.09.2013. All updates made before and on 13 September are written as "successful" in "Update history" folder, but when I open "Installed Updates" folder, I don't see nothing and there is written "No updates are installed on this computer", which is strange, because by this moment Windows Update was made automatically without any problems. Please help me to fix the problem with this error code!

ps.: On 23 of September I reinstalled Windows Update Software from Microsoft Web Page:
Microsoft Update
and the notification message " Windows can't check for updates" from my taskbar dissapeared and never appeared again, so..i thought the problem is solved, but yesterday evening(13 October) when i opened Widnows Update in my Control Panel and pressed "Check for updates" it started to seek for updates but after some time again showed me the same error code and the same message "Windows could not search for new updates". So..it seems Windows still doesn't update, no matter that i don't receive the error message on my taskbar anymore. I asked for help also on Microsoft Community forum, but didn't receive help . Now I am really out of ideas what to do

Today I used again the System Update Readiness Tool and the CheckSur file showed this:

So, it seems these 2 registry errors are the reason why my pc can't check for updates.
Does anybody know how to fix these 2 errors?

Have you run a full scan with Malwarebytes and your anti-virus to make sure that's not an issue?

I used the method 1 from this paper and it didn't help- the result is pasted on my first post. I can't make repair install (method 2 from this article), because I have OEM disk with Widnows Vista SP1. I bought the laptop with installed on it Windows. Later when it was prompted, upgraded it online and now i have Windows Vista SP2 on the laptop. The only one change what i made on my pc after last succesfull update was that i put Google Chrome (not Internet Explorer, because it was too much slow) as my default browser. Is it possible this to make the problem? I saw in Microsoft Web site that the update KB2862772, which had regisrty error is update for Interent explorer and it was replaced from Microsoft with other update because of problems with it. Do you think that if I reinstall Internet Explorer or install the replacement update, this will help to resolve the problem? I am wondering what is the reason for this problem? Bug in the update?

Hi,

Just to share my experiences with this error: -

I had the problem due to having two versions of MS Office on my computer (Both legally held I might add).

Once I removed the home student version & installed the removed programs from my Enterprise version, all was OK.

So you might be experiencing the same thing in some way?

None of these Fix utilities are working and I need HELP!

There's always Microsoft Fixit, this one in particular: Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working

Main Fixit page: Microsoft Fix it Solution Center: troubleshooting software issues

If you wish to change it to a local language click the option at the bottom left.

Microsoft also provide free support with any updating issues.
This nor the other FixIt utility worked for me.
Windows won't update and I don't even see a way to manually update . If there is a way please show me!

Okay, here's the history of my problem and my system specs:
Running Windows Vista 64bit Service Pack 2

I have a Dell desktop XP430.
The hard drive died so I replaced it and then installed Windows from the Dell re-installation disc.

I then installed a backup Image I had created with Paragon Personal Backup 9.

Everything is working fine after I installed various software updates and updated drivers.

But the ONE thing that won't work is WINDOWS UPDATES (oh, and I noticed that Windows Defender won't update either, since someone said if I update that first then Updates will work, so I tried that.)

I ran the Windows fixes including the one in this thread and it still did not fix the problem which the fix it program says is:

SERVICE REGISTRATION IS MISSING OR CORRUPT

I have spent about 2 hours on this, tried everything I could find except one really complicated fix that someone gave in another forum that involved tons of registry editing, using the recovery disc and all kinds of stuff.

I did go into the Services list and make sure the proper services were set on Automatic and Start, based on instructions I found on some other page about this problem.

The disc image I installed is around 2 years old so I really need to update Windows.

I tried to find a way to update Windows manually but couldn't find one. Is there no way to do that? Why can't I just manually find the right updates and install them?

Although ideally I would really like to get this problem fixed!

Can you help?
