Windows Vista Boot Issue

I have been using Windows Vista Business Edition 32bit for two months after a fresh install. A few days ago I began to experience serious performance issues during bootup; it began to take a lot more time to boot up than it was before. What I did was to manually configure Kaspersky AV 6.0 and ATI CCC 9.3 to start with administrator privileges during system boot. It was all okay then but when I removed the ATI CCC entry from the startup programs list in Windows Defender I began to experience serious problems about boot up times. I tried uninstalling both the AV and the ATI software but that was of no use. Additionally I have to wait all the startup programs to launch before I can initiate a task which requires administrator privileges. Otherwise no prompt box displaying allow deny appears even I have clicked on the program executable. Thanks very much for help.

Did u tried the system restore. Chose the restore point when your system had no problem.

Unfortunately I have system restore disabled excluding this how can I overcome the problem? Any spesific reason maybe

If you want a fast boot time download the following:

IE privacy Keeper - Download IE Privacy Keeper, Flash Saving Plugin, etc.
Tune Up Utilities - TuneUp America - TuneUp Utilities 2009
PerfectDisk 10 - PerfectDisk 10 Professional | Disk Defrag | PerfectDisk.com

Once you install them delete the installers then go to the vista start orb and type "prefetch" into the search bar and hit enter. Delete every file in there and close the folder. Next run IE Privacy Keeper and tick all the boxes you want then click "Clean UP Now". You can then close it and open Tune Up Utilities.

The most important things here are the startup manager under the "Increase Performance" tab and "1 Click Maintenance" under the "Clean UP Windows" tab. In the startup manager try to limit the amount of programmes starting to under 5. Anything else you do in tune up utilities is up to you. Once 1 Click Maintenance has finished open Perfectdisk 10.

Once PerfectDisk is open you'll see a heading of "Boot Time" with an empty box underneath it . Click on all the empty boxes so they have a tick in them and close PerfectDisk and restart the pc.

Once thats finished and your back at your desktop open PerfectDisk again and click on the analyse icon for the hard drive you want and then click on the start icon. Do this for every hard drive you have and be patient as this may take several hours to complete.

Once completed restart your pc and thats it.

I have tried the programs but the problem has become even worse now the boot up time is longer and sometimes ATI CCC does not load during boot. Before the installation of maintenance programs Kaspersky loaded last but after installation Kaspersky loads before ATI CCC although still making you wait for about 2 minutes. How can this problem be solved without formatting and reinstallation of Windows? I had this problems before my fresh installation of Windows Vista Business 32 bit edition and by time they gradually get worse so in my opinion reinstalling Windows is not the solution. By the way as I have mentioned before I have Kaspersky AV and ATI CCC configured to run with highest privileges through the task manager and before these programs I cannot initate a task which requires administrator prompts because the confirmation box is not displayed. Any help and suggestion would be gratefully accepted; Thanks.

It would have been better if you posted the Tune Up Utilities startup manager as i cant see what two of the microsoft startup programes are plus its more detailed.

But anyway heres what i would disable from that list:

HP digital Imaging
Catalyst Control Center
Sonic Focus Effects
Smax4PNP
all the Hewlett-Packard entries and Java as well.

Basically you need to ask if you really need them at startup. For example CCC can be started by right clicking the desktop and then clicking on it. You dont need it on all the time. Java certainly doesnt need to be there and as for the others are they drivers or applications if they are drivers you may wish to leave them alone but if its an application then remove it and stick a shortcut on your desktop for when you want to use it.

If your not sure about an item then it Tune Up Utilities set it to disabled and reboot. You can always go and enable it again if you miss it but if you find you dont need it then delete it.

Although I have all of them disabled the boot time is still very high and I have to wait after the desktop is displayed to initiate a task which requires administrator privileges otherwise pop up UAC box does not display so I can not launch the so called task. BTW I think the boot up displayed via the method mentioned at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/151819-boot-up-time.html is still way too much for my system and starting programs configration and I am strictly against disabling UAC due to security risks. Anyway thanks for help.

No problem. Using the Boot Up Time script how many seconds does it say it takes?

It takes 58 seconds according to the vb program but after it I have to wait like a minute or two for everything to be launched and their icons appear on the notification area. (with UAC) And sometimes the CCC fails as in the screenshot.

Try this to improve boot time. it could be a result of frag/integrity violations/system file errors/corruption/or bad disk sectors. This will attempt to fix it.
start, in search type, cmd> right click and "run as Administrator'> copy/paste the following and hit enter key:

sfc /scannow

then copy/paste this and hit enter (when sfc scan is finished)
do not close cmd window until defrag is complete (it wil show before/after frag results when finished)

defrag c: -w

then run checkdisk

I have 3 startup entries and for services i have 38 set to Automatic and 20 disabled, all the rest are set to manual. If you know how to use the bios you can make sure your harddrive is the first boot device, ensure your ram:cpu ratio is 1:1 and tighten ram timings. You can then try doing this:

1- disable vista sidebar and welcome center
2- set your virtual memory min and max size to 4096mb
3- Disable the error reporting, memory dumps and disable remote assistance.
4-Turn off uneeded services by using Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Service Configurations by Black Viper as a guide
5- Adjust power settings to max performance
6- enable advanced performance of the hard drives
7- Open Task Schedular and delete what you dont need to reduce hard drive activity
8- Ensure you have less than 5 startup programmes
9- Speed up SHUTDOWN to 2000
10- Go to the start orb and type prefetch into the search bar and hit enter. Delete all the files in the prefetch folder
11 - Right click your desktop and create a new shortcut. In the location box paste this in C:\Windows\System32\Defrag.exe -b %SystemDrive%
12 - Once the shortcuts created double click on it and allow it to run then reboot your pc.

Boot time increased a second or so after tweaks and the disabling of UAC. But I noticed an improvement while Kaspersky AV was loading and there was no error related with ATI CCC. However I think the boot up time can be much more improved but I have nearly tried every tweak can someone provide me the list of most useful tweaks.

My boot time is 52-54 secs. What i did is:
1: disable all startup items and unnecessary service in msconfig.
2: run a chkdsk c:/r in WIN RE to check for HDD errors.
3: In msconfig in BOOT tab, select the maximum # of processor.
4: delete contents of prefetch, temp, %temp% etc...
5: Change boot priority to hard drive.
5: Increase the virtual memory to Min: x3 and Max: x4.
Try these and let us know if a change occurs.

After deleting the contents of the prefetch folder then restarting the boot time was 64 seconds which was a little higher than before.
