Solved windows vista home premium product key you typed is invalid for activation

keep being asked for the product key. I installed the home premium on the vista basic laptop due to not having the disc to reinstall and it worked for a few weeks. My friend read out the product key she had but one of the letters which is a (/) will not go into it but she said that is what is printed. So now I am stuck as it will not allow me to use the forward slash so cannot do anything now....Any ideas please would be appreciated

Hello Angie,

It sounds like that may not have the product key number. The product key number is a sequence of 25 letters and numbers divided into 5 groups of 5 characters each.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/85023-product-key-number.html

Is this a OEM or retail copy of Vista that you installed?

You will not be able to use the product key number if your friend has it activated on her computer.

angie,
Look at the bottom of your laptop and it should have activation key(product key) there.
There is not back or forward slash in any activation keys that I have seen.
On some software you have to put in a hyphen - but more often than not it makes - it for you.
Post back if need more help..

Hi,
On a good number of laptops I have noticed, to protect the product key from damage, it has been stuck to the inside face of the battery. Or within that enclosed space.
Worth a try?

Hi, Guys

My friend has put it on her daughters computer a while ago and it was fine but I think because it has been on her laptop for a while it has started to fade out and perhaps she has misread it to me but if thats the case then I will not be able to use it.....But there again if it is on another part of the laptop ie battery will I be able to use it thou if it is being used on another laptop....I tried the number on the base of my laptop but because it now has vista home premium installed the product key that I have will not associate with the vista home premium as my originally was vista home basic.......

Hello and welcome.

Vista's idea was to come up with the key for the following reason, so people could not install there software on a lot of computers without paying for it. In the past people would loan the software to there friends and others as well, with that being said when your friend installed it on her computer it has to be activated by either a phone call to microsoft or through the internet and lets say the vista that you had only had a license for 1 computer, so when your friend installed it on hers then microsoft would stop all others from downloading it into there computer. A lot of the vista that is sold at stores for home use come with a 3 home computer license. Look at the software and it will tell you. Each computer has it's own unique serial number etc in the system and when it does not match up to what microsoft has then it won't activate any except for the one.

But please look at the vista disk it will tell you how many computers you can install it on. I hope this helps a liitle...

First thing to do is a deep AV Scan then make a Recovery Disk, in case this happens again.
Finally do a back up and now you are all set.
Didn't think it had a back or forward slash! Never seen one before and I am older than dirt.
Happy you got it resolved.

Edit: Another happy customer and a victory for the Vista Team...
