Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Hey njnitehawk,

Did replaced the failing HDD solve the problem?

Steven

to dmex:

as of this moment i have not been able to install sp1

maybe because of this problem i encountered: posted on hardware and devices forum

i have a new system(see info below) 1.5 months old
my wd 500 gig sata 11 is failing
i have been running into problems installing sp1
d/l several times
i bought sp1 from ms
i have run tests with one care it stated no problem
i ran sfc it stated some errors that could not be fixed
i ran other test on line also stated no problem
i d/l wd diag tools it stated a problem
i called wd support they confirmed the hd is failing
my question is could i have known about this hd failure from the beginning or
the way things happened was the only way
and could the hd being defective be my problem for not being able to install sp1
i would like to help myself as well as others not knowing that there is a solution

My Computer

the hdd is coming and hopefully

You can Install Vista over-the current installation without deleting/wiping your Hard-Drive, just don't select the option to format the HDD and Vista will rename your user folder to another location for safety...

You should always backup your files onto another Hard-Drive or CD/DVD before changing anything anyway ;)

It is not Vista giving you problems - it is the HP preloaded junk and their lack of writing good drivers that gets you in trouble with SP1.

It is a documented fact - most drivers that were not ready for SP1 have issues, and a good many o those drivers simply need to be uninstalled and then re-installed in order to have a good working machine.

Well, I don't really recommend this service pack because when I install it my laptop start having problem.

The problem that I have is that after I finish installing the service pack and when I put my laptop to standby mode and then I try to wake up my laptop and it won't wake up anymore.

So, I decided to uninstall the service pack and my laptop is fine now

I don't really recommend this service pack or can someone help why it does that after I install the service pack.

Hi mrl3321,

You really should be using SP1, without it you will not benifiet from the performance and stability updates or the updated security ...You are leaving the door open to spyware or viruses to infect your machine and it will cause more and more problems for you later on if you dont update

After you install SP1 you just need to update your laptop BIOS and chipset drivers (most important two) plus any other drivers available...Once this is done you should be able to use sleep again ;)

Microsoft finally wised up to the fact that their update package was causing millions of system crashes after installing the updates. Now they have you install SP1 first thing. Only took them about 9 months to figure that one out.

Don't touch it with a 10 foot pole.
My system was working perfectly before I "attempted" to install SP1.
I've tried a total of 9 times. Each time it gets to "Installed 3 of 3 100% complete" then it does "error found reverting". It can't evern revert properly. I get things like:
Problem with winboot, doesn't even boot.
Have to repair windows
Loggin and CPU stuck at 50% untill I restart Netman service.

Been a real nightmare.
I've given up on this piece of crap software :-(

Mikie, There is a way to install SP1. I had the same experience as you and I discovered a little program on the Microsoft website called MGADiag. This is a diagnostic piece of nonsense that is supposed to inform users whether they are using a genuine OS or otherwise. I downloaded it and fired it up. Three times it told me that my OS was not genuine, and on the fourth time it said all was O.K. !So, while it said all was O.K. I left it on the desktop and had my fifth try at SP1. There was no problem at all , and a colleague of mine has since successfully used the same workaround. And, incidentally, from being a silly joke of an OS which I was going to replace with XP, it is now really good and I like it a lot ! Try it, as they say on TV , it worked for me.

I suggest a reformat after saving what you can and then reinstall the Op system. IMO Microsoft will have you install SP1 now instead of the other update package which was in fact crashing computers by the millions.

Your problem with installing SP1 was that somehow your Op system was changed, SP1 checks for these changes and will not install if it's been changed at all from the original. You might try a systems file integrity check but best is to install SP1 on a fresh Op system installation if you don't want any problems.

Guys, There will be no more abuse here...

mikiehahn, These insults are unwarranted considering he is the only one who suggested you try anything and considering your responses I see why no-one else wants to bother helping you...

We can spend a whole year trying to figure out what piece of software you used or what configuration setting you set... that's making SP1 fail but no-one can be bothered figuring our your PC usage history for that long...

SP1 is finding some serious errors and not installing......So knowing that....and minus spending the next year trying to figure it out......or spending hundreds letting a computer shop try figure it out......Start with a fresh and clean installation by reinstalling because thats exactly what they do to every 2000, XP, 2003, Linux, OSX or Vista machine returned to any Computer Shop...

Chevell, was correct about you reinstalling because its standard practice everywhere and used by IBM, Intel, Novell, AMD, Linux, Apple and many others...

They all do the same thing and reinstall a fresh copy ;)

Would you continue driving around using a blown tyre on your car or reinstall another one because only an idiot would keep driving a car with a blown tyre or continue using an installation he already knows is seriously *******...

Im installing Vista-SP1 on 20-50 machines daily then setting them up...I only see XP machines being returned for service or support, Considering the volume of business we do and from friends its obvious to me and others here on the forum that something is seriously malfunctioning with your Installation so like I said...Instead of spending a few hundred $$ letting a shop reinstall it... just do it yourself

You can fix your malfunctioning software and have SP1 installed within an hour of reading this so listen to our advice...stop complaining and insulting others and just do it... :sarc:

Sorry, my mistake. I was looking for a little more than the standard Microsoft response "reboot if that doesn't work reformat". I like to know why my tire keeps going flat. Don't want to just keep replacing the tire when the real problem is the bag of nails in my driveway. Solved my problem without rebuilding my whole system, Thanks Zack.

My Computer

I have been trying for a solid 2 months to try and download this Service Pack update. I am having no luck what-so-ever. The only way I can even get my computer (not even 1 year old yet!) to start is to repeatedly press the F8 key before the Windows logo appears. I know it is supposed to take an hour, but after 30 minutes I start getting this message !!0XC0190036!! 591/91360 Helppane.exe I am not a tech type person so I am really lost. Any chance the makers of this Vista Pack will just send out an updated disk? (Vista came loaded on my computer when I bought it so I don't have a disk.) Thank you so much for any help that comes my way.
