Some advanced users have found Windows Update hacks online that enable them to install updates in more or less the old-fashioned way. If Microsoft takes down the updates (and I’m sure they will eventually), then a repository will be the last resort for those who are obsessive-compulsive about Microsoft patches from previous decades. Personally, I would never waste my time manually installing 200 old patches: I would just install Platform Update and move on.

Hi legacyfan:

I'm not certain, but as far as I know Vista SP2 users performing a clean reinstall of their OS can still use the Dism++ utility to install the ~ 220 missing security updates released between Service Pack 2 (25-May-2009) and end of extended support on 11-Apr-2017. See my 26-Sep-2022 post in VUser's Windows6.0-kb936330-x64.exe Crashes Mid Install (0x8007000D Error).

If you aren't familiar with Dism++ see SIW2's 02-Dec-2021 instructions in post # 3186 of Vista ISO Download. The GitHub home page for Dism++ is <here>.

The monthly MSRT hasn’t worked on Vista since April 2017, and it was able to discriminate between Vista and Server 2008. I assume you only see it because of a tool you are using for updates. IDK if this month’s 5.110 even works on Server 2008 or Windows 7. Microsoft has not yet removed them from the list of supported operating systems here, but that might only be because they laid off 10,000 employees recently.

so MSRT has been found to work on vista now? (that would be a big help for virus scans)

No, what I actually wrote was:
The monthly MSRT hasn’t worked on Vista since April 2017, and it was able to discriminate between Vista and Server 2008...
If an extended kernel user was spoofing Server 2008 SP2 or Windows 7, then it might conceivably work. You tell me.
