Solved WINSXS problem and lacking of space.

I currently have 20GB free space of 221GB after using Disk Cleanup and CCleaner and deleting some files.

I decided to download WinDirStat because I felt like my hard drive space was just disappearing all the time. (I got this computer in 2008). And it showed that WINSXS folder size is 136,0 GB!!! Which makes sense because I have 20,9GB of music, 5,70GB of pictures and files + some programs and maybe 5GB of games.

I Googled about Winsxs and read that I can't delete this folder.

So my question is why is it so big (usually this folder is 5-10GB to some people?) and how can I decrease it?

EDIT: Winsxs is 136,0 GB and ManifestCache is 126,2 GB ?

Managed to solve it myself.

This thread was a huge help: Winsxs Folder size increased to 60 GB

Winsxs folder is now 9,9 GB.

After installing SP2 type the following into an elevated cmd
compcln.exe
then
y
to confirm
This is the same as the vsp1cln command after SP1 and will gain you a little space

It could be that Personal Messaging isn't enabled until a certain post count to discourage spammers.

Interesting read. On my old desktop I do remember having my sxs folder get high but I don't remember how high. It certainly wasn't as high as some people reported in that thread. It seems to me that if the files are only hard links then it should be safe to delete them as long as the originals are retained however I have never tried to reduse it. I do know that having an sxs error can be extremely difficult to fix so I would be cautious when messing around with it. Does anyone know if they fixed this in Windows 8? Not that I would jump to it if they did.

sxs usage on my lightly used Vista virtual machine is 8 gb. On a 30 gb "drive" that's 26%. Wow. compcln.exe didn't help even in safe mode. One thing I've learned is to never go by Microsoft's minimum requirements or even their recommended requirements especially when it comes to hard drive and memory. Always give your self a little extra.

Heh. I can remember my first Pentium. It was a Pentium III 550 MHZ with 128 MB ram. According to the docs it should run W2K server with domains. The whole nine yards. I tried to set up a domain on that thing. It begged me to kill it painlessly.

That's nothing. I inherited my grandmother's compaq. 233 mhz Pentium MMX with 32 mb of ram. It came with windows 95. Seriously though I work in server support and my mac is more powerful than some of the servers I've worked on.

At risk of provoking the guys who started programming on 4 bit chips, my first PC was Leading Edge Model D XT clone. A great machine considering I learned assembler on it with no break out switch. Cycle the power all day long. It never complained.

They were known for being indestructible. A year or so ago I saw a video on YouTube where a guy boots from the original 5.25" Dos floppy. Brought back memeories.
