Solved Word to Pdf - pages move

I created a word 97-2003 document with contents, index and bibliography:

The contents pages are roman numberals (i, ii).
The main body regular arabic (1-6)
The index roman numerals (i-xxv)
Bibliography (no page number)

When I send to print or convert to pdf, pages 1 and 2 of the main body become xxv.

Then everything gets mixed up and the next fex pages, which should be appendix 8, are shown with arabic numerals 1,2 etc, then it cuts back to another part of the main body of the work.

It is a mess. How do I get over this bug?

This is really urgent as it is an assignment I have to submit electronically and pdfing it is the best way to shrink it down to a size that is not rejected by the tutor's browser. (Zipping it also messes it up and it only goes down by 400KB) whereas the pdf is 1/5th of the size).

Hello Lottiemansion,

Thanks for getting on the case so promptly.

My operating system is Vista Home Premium 32bit.

The file size is:
19.1MB (Word 97-2003)
18.7MB (Zipped)
10.1MB (Word 2007)
3.9MB (pdf)

I downloaded the pdf from the link you kindly sent.

I'm afraid I don't know whether it is the same as what I already have on my menu or not:

My Office Button menu has the option to publish a word document as pdf or xps. This is what I have been using.

I tried it again thinking the new download had replaced it. Same result.

As you can guess, I'm not as computer literate as I ought to be!

Hi,

What is the maximum file size that you can submit?

Different types of additional media will increase the file size quite dramatically, so what have you included in the document? Video, picutres etc.

Can you think of a different method/ way of "Numbering" the pages to achive a successful conversion?

How long have you got before time runs out?

If not, you could "Personal Message" me the document (PDF) by clicking on my name above & I will look at it & then edit it to correct the mistakes. If I can? Then I'll send it back. OK?

Hello,

Thanks so much for offering to edit the document. Unfortunately for me, it is based on research done on a public sector organization. They definitely would not be happy with me sharing it with others apart from the chartered organization to which I hope to become accredited.

Great idea about re-numbering, I think I shall do that. I still have a couple of days in hand. Something else urgent I need to get done today and tomorrow. Will revisit over the weekend and hope your suggestion works.

Will keep you up-dated.

Many thanks.
Best.

Desola, there's a few other possibilities that you can experiment with. First of all, when you refer to "publishing" the document, did you mean you did a "Save As" to the pdf format? If not, try that first.

Then, I would also click on Save As - Other Formats, because there is a whole long list of other formats that you could save the Word doc as, PRIOR to saving it as a pdf. In other words, get to the pdf format in two steps rather than one. In that way, converting the Word doc to another format first, before saving that new format to pdf, might possible preserve your numbering (as well as any other layout problems you might've had in the conversion).

Or, as a last resort, why not PRINT your Word doc and then scan it back into your system. That way it should be perfect!

Oh, and here's another possibility --- you could transfer the original Word doc to a travel drive (memory stick) and take it to Kinkos (or other 3rd party computer resource) and see if they can help you get it to a pdf format.

Dear LottieMansion and Imperfect1,

Many thanks for your inputs.

I tried everything suggested. I think it is a bug with the macros that create tables of contents and indices.

The software that came with my laptop already had the facility to convert to pdf. When I go into 'Save as' there is the option to save as pdf or xps. When you choose save as pdf, you click on publish to convert. There's no other choice.

Finally found the solution today so my assignment has gone off. Yay!

Simply use the Adobe web-site to convert to pdf. This seems to get rid of the bug (remember, even when I sent the document to print, without converting to pdf, it messed up the sequence).

One has to register using your e-mail address and creating a password. It allows you to convert 5 documents to pdf for free. Thereafter, there is a fee - I don't know what it is.
Shrunk it down in size significantly too.

So there we are. I guess I need to let Vista know and see if they have a fix.

All the very best and thanks again.

Hi,

Thats great news.

Please ensure you tell "Adobe" about the fault in the conversion & that will assist others to get the fix too.

I will request this thread be closed soon. Glad to be of assistance & sorry we didn't fix it.

Hi,

Found this free printer software package which does not convert the document but prints it to a pdf file.

This option may work easier than going on line to Adobe. It also has no restrictions on the number of documents you can produce.

Give it a try & see how you go, it just might be a solution.
