Hi,

Yes, once it has finished, install the latest versions of both in the same installer before anything has the chance to corrupt anything! Download a new installer off the Apple site. Good luck and fingers crossed!

Installed iTunes/QT, installed and ran (out of the room!)...........no error messages whatsoever..........

Gawd, if it wasn't for all the frustration it's caused me I'd be almost wiping a tear from my eyes!!
There was very nearly one extra iTouch on ebay!

My only problem now is, because there's no music in my iTunes library (it's all on my iTouch!) trying to see if I can transfer it all on, along with the various apps. However, I somehow have a sense of foreboding on this one!

More googling.....!!

Hello,

What you are asking to do is not officially possible, but actually it is (and for free) Download this software: i-FunBox | iPhone File Manager plus Hi-Speed Transfer Tool - Also iPad File Manager, iPad Browser or iPad Explorer.

Switch your iPhone on to Home screen or wherever (out of Standby), choose what you want to download and click start. I cannot explain it all now, but it is very self explanatory, but you do have to click Start, about in the middle of the Window. No jailbreak required or anything.

Hey Richard!
Going great guns now getting my music sorted! Best nights sleep I've had in 6weeks not trying to think about msi errors etc! lol!

I've used funbox and it's worked well for music - does it do the same for apps that are sat on the ipod? Can't see the relevant "buttons"!

I didn't want to put this on the thread as it's a bit off the original topic!

Looking at that software, I was wrong. You need to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch to download your apps. However, (check this in case I am wrong) if your note down your apps, try to sync your iPhone/iPod Touch (wiping it if necessary) then buy the apps again, if you use the same account, you will not be charged again. So, wipe your iPhone/iPod Touch then buy your apps again for free, but confirm this before you do.

Don't worry about your badge. There is no pressure, no minimum post count etc. You may leave now and never come back, and there will be no problem. Don't worry about being self taught, I am a self taught 14 year old. However, I have learned so much from this forum. I gave you the badge because you used capital letters, and obviously know a lot about computers.

I am a professional computer repair technician, and I ran into a client with exactly the same problem on an Acer Aspire desktop, and I have a fix!

But first, Richard, I was very impressed with your posts in this thread. You tried pretty much everything I could think of and then some.

Something I found very interesting was that the owner on the QuickTime, iTunes etc. folders in Program Files reads "unable to display current owner." This led me to suspect some serious NTFS corruption.

Running chkdsk on the drive found errors. I was then able to install QuickTime and iTunes. However, I still had to manually correct the permissions on the folders before they applications would work, but they do work. Since I had to do this, I am sure there are still some deep issues with the MSI system and it's probably necessary to do a repair install to completely fix the root causes.

But if you are in need a quick fix, this did work in my case! Let quickly recap what I did:

• Used Revo Uninstaller to completely remove iTune, QuickTime, Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device Support, iPod Update, and any other related applications and their registry entries.
• Restarted and made sure all the Program Files folders were gone. I had to take ownership of some to completely delete them.
• Reinstalled QuickTime by itself.
• Fixed the permissions on the QuickTime folder.
• Installed iTunes, ignoring the error message about a Windows Installer package problem.
• Fixed the permissions on the iTunes, Bonjour, and iPod folders.

I hope this helps! I would love it if someone could figure out what the root cause of these mangled permissions is and post it here.

I want to give my too coins, since I have spent about one night on exactly this problem.
I have solved in quite a polite way. The problem is due to the fact the iTunes try to install with a default user ID that is probably the default on a clean windows install, but not on my ACER laptop (your too, isnt it?) with VISTA HOME 32bit.
The step that actually blocks the installation is when it tries to run the Apple update service, but none of the programs is runnable because of the wrong ownership. I found precious information in this thread to dig out the problem - thank you all.

Here is what I have successfully done:
- unpacked the iTunes setup package (I have worked with version 9.2.1) using 7zip
- run AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi only: this is the one that blocks actually either iTunes and QuickTime standalone install.
- when it get stuck on the dialog, I have gone in c:\Program files, changed ownership to "Administrators" and done a copy of the whole folder "Apple Software Update".
- let the installation procedure revert (and delete "Apple Software Update").
- renamed the copy back to "Apple Software Update"
- gone in and executed "SoftwareUpdate.exe"
- This actually detect the availability of iTunes and QuickTime
- Let it go and install
- After (actually.... meaningwhile) install, changed the ownership of all the installed folders to "administrators".

after iTunes works fine - finally I was able to turn on my new iPhone.... Fiuh I was afraid of a full windows reinstall. I do not know if now updates are checked automatically... but this is secondary at this moment! I hope Apple will patch it soon.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to say a huge "thank you" for all your work here, which has allowed me to solve this rather obscure problem. I had the same dodgy "there is a problem with Windows Installer message" when I was trying to reinstall iTunes. I am also running an Acer Aspire with Vista Home Premium 32bit - not exactly a coincidence by the sounds of things. I started to suspect it was the Apple Software Updater that was the cause when I got the same WI error message when using the uninstaller to remove that program.

Anyway, for the next poor sap who encounters this issue let me list the steps I took. They're completely a mash up of what you guys had already detailed.

1. used Revo Uninstaller to remove the Apple suite, in the order suggested by the Apple Support site. Rebooted.
2. manually verified that all folders had been removed by looking in all the places suggested on the aforementioned Apple site
3. Installed Quicktime without iTunes.
4. Changed ownership on the Quicktime and Apple Software Updater folders to administrator
5. Ran Software Update (located in the Apple Software Updater folder)
6. Installed iTunes when prompted
7. As it was installing, changed the ownership of the folders (Bonjour, iTunes, iPod) to administrator.
8. Happy happy joy joy! iTunes running as normal.

The only real difference here is skipping out the iTunes Setup download step, as you get ASU with the Quicktime download.

Thanks again team for your work on this. I didn't even know what ownership was, let alone that it might be causing this ridiculous error.

Having managed to resolve my problem thanks to suggestion from you guys I thought I'd add the steps I took to resolve this issue as well as provide a warning.
I had this exact problem whilst installing Itunes 10 using auto update. My laptop is an ACER Aspire 6935. Is ACER the problem?
This was a major concern as I have an Ipod, Iphone and Ipad and depend hugely on itunes.
Having followed the previous methods to remove all itunes and quicktimes I then done the following:-
Extracted msi files from QuickTimeInstaller.exe and run AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi from a command window as administrator. When it fails I copied the files before rollback and then created the 'Apple Software Update' folder from that. Changed permissions to local user (Which has admin rights)
run QuickTime.msi from a command window as administrator. Changed permissions to local user.
I then run the Itunes setup and as previously suggested, ignored the package error. I then changed all folder permissions to local user.
Itunes then loaded but gives a message that 'The software required for communication with ipods and mobile phones was not installed correctly' it then tries to repair. It does not manage to repair.
***WARNING*** At this point I tried to run an OS update to mt Iphone which left it unusable as the Ipod service was unavailable. DO NOT DO THIS.
After hours of head scratching, re-installing etc I got to the bottom of the problem by changing the logon properties of the IPOD Service to my local used. This then allowed me to restore the back up of my iphone.
Why is this happening, this is the first time I have had such issues with my Itunes updates.

My concern is next update will break it all again.
The Apple Software Update part still fails so I don't know what to do to fix that one.

I just wonder what apple has changed in their process as normally I just run the updates automatically as my local user and it all worked.

Yes correct, exact same issue as is detailed here. For now I decided to restore back as I do not have the time to go through the process of upgrading at the moment.
Has anyone found an easy fix?

Niemero, I did manage to solve the problem before when I went to iTunes 10 as detailed above. At that time I did have problems with the Ipod Service but resolved that too.
At the moement I'm just too busy with other things to go through the pain of itunes 10.1 update. I will get around to it soon.
But obviously as a warning to others, this still occurs on 10.1

Hey everyone, and to start off, thanks for all your help regarding this issue.

I coincidentally (or maybe not so), am using and Acer Aspire, and had this exact same problem with error code 1721, although thanks to your help have managed to solve it.

I was wary of bumping this thread back into activity, although as it seems to have been so helpful to a few people, is probably worth that anyway for more people to come across.

I used the same method posted by a few people:
1) I started off removing any programmes and folders associated with Apple. All began fine with me, and I didn't hit any administrator required problems. Unfortunately I did hit a brick wall when I got the same error code from an attempted unistall.
2) I then had to use Windows Install Clean Up to forcefully remove this program, although this was difficult to get hold of as it is no longer distributed by Microsoft due to the damage it 'can' cause.
3) After making sure everything associated to Apple was gone, I did a system restart for safe measure, and then double checked.
4) I then began installing Quicktime (only QT for starters), and once installed moved onto Itunes. Once again this happened smoothly.

This appears to be a good temporary fix at least, although I don't hold out too much hope for the next update.
