.zip files are just containers. I think the best way to explain it is with an example.
Say you've gone shopping and you have one bag full of food. You get home and take the food out of the bag. Your bag doesn't have anything left in it any more so we can get rid of itBut you still have the food.
The same goes for your zip file. You've extracted the files - so the .zip file has nothing in it any more. So you can delete itBut you still have the files in the place you extracted them to.
Sorry to use childish methods of explaining this, I started writing it out in full and it was just horrible to read!
