    Another BSOD thread!

hey all, i was a member here back in 2009 and my problem was solved by yourselves then i think, having a problem on my desktop at the moment.

I will attach the dump file tomorrow after work.

last thursday i noticed one of the fake virus alert hijackers popped up on my pc. as usual i just alt+ctrl+del to close it without touching it, then booted into safe mode and ran malware bytes, spybot s&d and avg free. looked like the problem was sorted. headed away for the weekend, came home sunday and got a bsod after a while. restarted and looked ok. then monday same thing happened again. Again i restarted and seemed ok. not sure if the bsod is related to the attempted malware?

yesterday turned on my pc and i get a bsod within about 2 minutes. I tried restoring to two weeks ago, looked ok, loaded up a game then bang, same bsod so i just left it last night.

its a desktop running vista home premium, 4 gig ram, ati hd4870 graphics card, vista should be fairly up to date.

tried removing each ram module and still kept happening, i doubt both ram modules are fooked? had updated my ati drivers through steam about 2 weeks ago.

the stop errors i have seen are:

    0x3b
    0x1e
    0x0a

I also tried taking the graphics card out, cleaned all the fans, case, cpu, gfx, and put the card back in. booted it up and was running ok for 2 or 3 mins but i left it and went training. when i came back in 2 hours later there was a bsod.

I then tried using a vista repair disc i created, I ran the mem check and that found nothing (i think, both passes went to 100%), though it said "results will be posted upon startup", but of course, upon startup it bsod'd!

I tried "repairing the startup" from the repair disc but it found no problems.

the pc will boot into safe mode and not get a bsod at all? does that mean its not hardware related?

a friend in work mentioned it could be virus related and that av might have missed it, to remove avg and install the microsoft one and see if that finds anything?

i get the Driver_Irql_not_less_or_equal error too.

    All ideas are much appreciated!

    thanks in advance.

    Rob

    Re: Another BSOD thread!

This looks like it should be easy. Follow instructions and you should be ok. If BSODs do return just post.

The reports that you have submitted reveal clues to the cause of your problem. They do not give a definitive answer. The more reports that we receive the more clues are made available improving our chances of finding a solution to your problem. Each remedy suggested must be performed regardless of placement in this report or other variables. You may have to experience several more BSODs until the final answer is discovered.

    If overclocking restore normal settings

    SFC /scannow
    System Files - SFC Command

    Scan with your Anti Virus

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done:

    thanks rich,

    i disabled spdt.

i ran sfc /scannow - it found file problems and fixed them

my anti virus (avg free) i uninstalled yesterday in an attempt to install Microsoft security essentials, but i have been unsuccessful as it wont allow me to install in safe mode, and i cant access normal mode long enough to install. no anti virus atm!

i have tried to remove alchohol120% but keep getting an error, doesnt show up in my add/remove programs either.

ok, just rebooted in normal mode and i have gone maybe 5 mins without a crash, ill update in a few mins and see if it bsods again.

if it doesnt, then rich you are a fooking genius!!

sptd is stillthere when i done as you suggested, i have set its start to 4.

I have tried to use the remover but it keeps saying "sptd is not a valid win32 application" i tried using the 32 and 64 bit, both give the same result.

    thanks rich

    Re: Another BSOD thread!

Go to the SPTD location and change the ending of SPTD to Sptd.bup

    C-->Windows-->System 32-->drivers

ok rich, done as u suggested, renamed to .dup and restarted in normal mode.

restarted in normal mode and after 2 mins:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    STOP 0X0000000D1
