Solved vista keeps starting up in safe mode but still cannot use computer

my sons window vista computer starts up in safe mode and displays Techguys v4.8 it displays a menu saying:
1. start microsoft windows repair enviroment
2. reinstall windows
3. advanced options
4. exit and restart computer
All of which do nothing and so computer is none usable as cannot get passed this part. Tried looking for solutions but found nothing, can anyone help to solve this.

Welcome
Click on the start button bottom left and type msconfig then hit <enter>. Go to the boot
tab and uncheck the Safe Boot option.

I cannot get the start button to show up...the screen is just black/ blank with the techguy v4.8 menu displayed cannot use anything

If you tap F8 repeatedly as the computer is starting up,
does it take you to the same TechGuys screen?

Not a problem
In safe mode choose command prompt
In command promt type msconfig and follow my last post

no it says in the command window....misconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

it says exactly the same for that one...its like there is no system on the computer...it is weird

Do you have a Vista install DVD?

had a look but cannot find one but my husband remembers it already being on computer when we bought it from shop..I have tried putting a disc in to see if it does anything but nothing happens. You can hear the disc start up but that is it.

When your in safe mode, do you see destructive recovery
or restore or something similar.

if I click on reinstall windows on the choose option screen it has two....1.restore to previous....but tried that and does not do it....2.complete install which would if it worked that is would make us lose all files that are on computer and they are not backed up on any discs......see that is what I was wanting to try and do so that I could try and reinstall from start but am unable to access any of the files to back them up first :-(

Rich, I have clicked on the web link and I am total puzzled as to what to do as I clicked on the highlighted Ubuntu live cd and the IMGburn but neither website shows the image page(write image to disc) that it displays on the geek website so dont want to just press download on just anything as not sure what it will be
