Ardneh has given you the correct website for the download of Ubuntu. Use Geeks to show you what to do.

Okay, if you have a DVD drive that can write to a DVD-R,
then you can use ImgBurn to burn the Ubuntu .iso to an unused DVD-R.

It doesn't have to be a CD.

Unless, I've misunderstood, and that's already been tried unsuccessfully.

I am in the process of downloading the file again and will try to burn it onto the disc without it being formatted this time and hopefully it will work.

Can I not just take out the hard drive and put it into another computer (which is the same) to get the files off that way...or is that not possible without ruining it completely....worth asking :-)

Yes, if the HD does not have problems, you can remove your stuff using another computer. Very good idea.

Heres my slant.
You seem to be having problems with the Ubuntu. If you make a mistake you can lose everything.
I think the suggestion that you had and then confirmed by me and Ardneh is the way to go. Use your hard drive in another computer. You may want to get help to install it.

Sounds like it may be time to set the Ubuntu method aside
and look towards adding the hard drive to your working computer.

are the hard drives easy to remove by ones self or should we go to a shop to have it done

Also....How about if I got hold of a vista disc and try to reinstall it would that stop the files from being lost if they are still in the system...which they should be as cannot understand why it showed up on the ubuntu as none.

By recovery Disc if you mean to restore the computer to factory settings, then you will LOSE ALL your files. It will be like it was the day you took it home. No updates, SPs, or your stuff.
