Problem with screen/possible graphics card?

Hello, this is the first time I'm posting something like this to a forum like this and first time I ever had an issue like this.

I attached a picture of the issue.

I was told that it might be the video card/graphics card. Is there a way to fix this issue or do I have to buy a new video/graphics card? Or is it the screen itself?

What happened was i was just browsing the internet, then my screen started to flash and then the blue screen appeared and shut down. I tried fixing the resolution back to 32bit, since its at 4bit and it wouldn't change it back... it stays at 4bit. There's also a vertical black strip on the right side of the screen, as you can tell on the picture i attached. I think it's also crashing my firefox, since its done it numerous of times. I have a HP Pavillion dv6000, windows vista home premium. If you need more info on my laptop, I can find it and let you know. Thanks in advance!

Ummm, yha... thats very possibly the video card going bad, or the internal cable.

First check using a regular monitor... Plug it in and see if the problem peresists.

What video cards in it? Is it the nvidia or intel?

Edit

I highly doubt its a driver.... The lack of screen in that solid bar is more of faulty hardware.

@Rich: I am running the BSOD file you posted here. Thanks!

@Pat: Well its a Nvidia geforce 8400m GS, Intel [Centrino]Core 2 duo t7100. I tried hooking it up to my tv, as a monitor and for some reason, it doesn't let me or have any options to do so. So I am guessing that it is the video card. So what's the best thing to do in a case like this? I know I can send it back to HP, if it has warranty, but is there other options, like just buying a new video card or what?

My Computer

No, video cards are soldered right nto the mobo...

To cycle the screens it's fn + f4 or f5 or f6 and it should cycle through screen, screen monitor or just monitor.

The 8 series cards are natorious for issues as they run hot. Theres people who have fixed different issues with hem by heating them up to reflow the solder.... Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I'd try warrentee as it'll probably be the smartest.

@Pat: I thought so. Well, I'll check out the warranty and hopefully its still under it. If it's not, what else is best to do? I was suggested to ghost my computer, but back up all my files first, will that work?

@Rich: I am stuck on the 3rd step there of your BSOD steps. Not clear as to how to save it as html or if typing that in wrong spot... sorry. I am completely new to anything, issues and so, like this.

Ghosting will basically make a copy of your computer as its setup now. That way, if you get it back messed up, you can$ easily reset it back.

Its a very good idea to do, as well as remove all your files before you send it away.

As rich said, Go ahead and take your time... we're not gonna just leave you hanging. So gather the info and poster up.

@Rich: Hopefully I did this right and its what you needed. I didn't add that perfmon part, since i didn't know how to get that or get it and save it as an html. But here is the zip file you asked for, i hope.

Vista:
-32bit
-Windows Vista Home Premium
-OEM; I got it the way i bought it. i didnt change nothing on the OS or the OS itself.
-Age of system? i believe it says 2007 (near the copyright, under system >Windows edition)
-Never reinstalled the OS system, age of OS? 2007...?

Hopefully that is the right basic system info you need and zip file too. Thanks for all the help!

Unloaded modules:
You have submitted about a dozen dump reports. I checked about 7 or 8. They showed different causes and solutions (this is normal, the reports are like puzzle pieces)
The most common and most likely scenario was code 116. Its definition is shown above.
Code 116, in your case is probably the Graphics Driver or Card. It gives as a cause
nvlddmkm.sys, your grahics driver.
I have included one of our best threads on Code 116 and the primary suggestions are to update the driver and if that is not successful the card itself may be damaged. You need to be concerned only with the first post, in that thread, at this point.
http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-lockup-debug-how/63320-stop-0x116-video_tdr_error-troubleshooting.html
TechTips - NVIDIA Blue Screen of Death from Nvlddmkm.Sys - Associated Content from Yahoo! - associatedcontent.com

In addition I suggest the following to insure that the BSODs stop now and to prevent possible BSODs in the future

The reports that you have submitted reveal clues to the cause of your problem. They do not give a definitive answer. The more reports that we receive the more clues are made available improving our chances of finding a solution to your problem. You may have to experience several more BSODs until the final answer is discovered.

If overclocking restore normal settings

SFC /scannow
System Files - SFC Command

Scan with your Anti Virus

Update outdated listed drivers. If I have inadvertently listed any Microsoft Drivers, they can be ignored. If the list is extensive I have included the driver verifier test so that you may determine which drivers are in need of immediate attention.

How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper
www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

Thanks Rich! I would see if i can download or update my video card, meant driver from nvidia site. As of right now, today i turned off my laptop for the whole day and well, I turned it on just to make sure it does turn on and all. My screen went back to normal, as nothing ever happened to it. Though acouple of hours later, my screen flickered again while my screen saver was going, it even froze my screen saver and couldn't get my computer to respond. I immediately shut off my computer. As bad as it sounds, I didn't want it to crash again and well have the issue again. Ok, clicked both links you posted for me, which of the other links in that link should I look into the most?? I also am trying to do the automatic scanning in the nvidia drivers link, but I'm assuming its taking too long and I am putting a fan close to my computer, just in case it might be over heating... yeah, went a step forward, but I'll still try to update my drivers. Though if this automatic scanning doesnt work or takes too long, how can i know or tell what version of graphics card i have or so? Thanks for all the help so far :D.

The important link is the one from Seven Forums. At this point it is just information about whats happening.
This tell you all that you need to know
Go to device manager
display adapters
right click
properties
All information should be there.

@Rich: Well, i'll be updating the drivers... at the moment am downloading the file from nvidia site and well, hopefully it solves the issue [at least i have updated that, just in case]. I am still putting a fan close to my laptop and hopefully that works too... don't wanna say solve it, but possibly too. Thanks, figured out which version i have or type. I hope after i do all of this, i have no more problems like this. Though, I'm thinking of getting a desktop. I'm not sure if, well... a desktop is "better" in a sense or more secure. I use my laptop now for some games like WoW, photoshop/after effects and Maya... programs like that. Can you give me input as to what type of desktop brands and specs I should look into?

I have one big concern. Problems like this are usually drivers. If that the case, you may be set.
It can be the card as was discussed in an early post.
Then these reports are like puzzle pieces, we may not have enough pieces to see the whole picture
That being said everything points toward graphics card or driver.

Well, I do hope its the drivers too. Updating them would be easier and cheaper than shipping or letting my laptop stay overnight at a place. Can you recommend me the best or "best" desktop brands and specs for programs and games that I mentioned on my previous post? I just might think into investing with a desktop. Thanks in advance!

I am really not familar with gaming computers. You are most likely a lot younger than me. I have MS Office and a few other programs, but not one game.

I would suggest that after this is all worked out, you go to the gaming section of this forum and post the question there.
