Need help w/ the GUI defragmenter....why doesn't it work??

Last week I bought a new Acer Aspire 6350 w/ Vista - My 1st Vista machine.
After uninstalling all the Acer bloatware, I open the GUI defragger, it analyzes C: for 2 secs (doesn't even mention analyzing the other 2 partitions) then it says "your file system performance can be improved". I defrag it the C:, it takes 45 mins or so and done.

I go to my wife's Dell Vista laptop and go to the GUI defragger. It analyzes all 3 of her partitions. Weird, mine only analyzed C: for 2 secs. I then go back to my new Acer and run the GUI degragmenter again. After a 2 sec C: analysis it says "your file system......." again.

Then when I go the command line defrag, run "defrag c: -a" it says I don't need to defrag.

Bottom line is the GUI defragmenter doesn't work on this new laptop. It doesn't scan all partitions, when started it runs for a bit, then it just stops and it goes back to saying " your file system performance can be improved".

Pls help.

How can I fix this?

I did a search and came up w/ http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/193109-defrag-question.html

The OP was having the same problem as me, but there really isn't a solution listed.

I did download Auslogics Disc Defrag. Every single time I run it, it shows 1/2 my drive being fragmented, and it takes less then 45 secs to defrag the C: partition.
It looks pretty, but is it really working? Less then 45 secs seems awfully fast, especially when I go analyze again it still shows 1/2 the drive is fragmented.

Any suggestions?

Have you looked at the options for disk defragmenter?

my first statement is a polite WINDOWS PROGRAMMED DEFRAGGERS CAN GO BURN LIKE MARILYN MANSON AT A BAPTIST REVIVAL! Now that that is out of our system, I suggest Auslogics free defrag or if you've got the cash pony-up for their Boost speed program. I promise you will never want for effective maintenance again!

If you must pay Tune Up Utilities is better in every respect than Boostspeed. JK Defrag is an open source choice and has been recently updated to My Defrag.

Hadn't heard of them before, I've just found Boost speed to be the most user friendly of the ones that had a free trial. Plus is reasonable $$ and can be put on computers adifinitum.

I can only see what volumes (of the 3 I have) after I click the "Defragment Now" button.
Your pic shows the GUI analyzing 2 of 2....Mine will not even get to that point. It says scanning 1 of 3 (c: ), then 2-3 secs later it says "your file system can be improved". It doesnt scan the 2 volumes.

I appreciate the help.

Try running Chkdsk - open up Windows Explorer - then right click on your hard drive select properties, tools, and then check now. Then tick both boxes, reboot and wait for the results.

Have you tried an alternate defragger?

Yes, I have tried Auslogics Disk Defrag. Thats not the point though, Im curious why the GUI doesnt seem to work.

I ran a couple Google searches and it seems like a few people have this problem, but there hasnt been any solutions.

just a thought, but are you running defrag under a limited user account? i have never used the gui vista defrag--either command line or more recently, my defrag, formerly jkdefrag.

You can try these 2 shortcuts in this Utilities.zip

Just unzip the file then click on a shortcut and allow it to run (the window will close automatically once its done) Once both shortcuts have run, reboot your pc and then go and try the windows gui defrag.

I'll try this tonight. Can you pls explain what the shortcuts will do. I'm new to Vista, and never had defrag issues w/ past Windows.

Thanks!

hi stcshindo

Sorry theres actually three shortcuts in my zip file. The first is an extended version of disk cleanup which allows you to clean away more trash files and the other two are defrag shortcuts. One of them defrags the boot files and the other defrags all files.

Using the gui defrag it will skip file fragments larger than 64mb but by using the defrag shortcut it will defrag all files regardless of size.

Question....when I click on the your "defrag all" shortcut, is it similar to doing a "defrag c: -w" through the command line?
If so, I have already done that and the GUI still doesnt work.
