Re: is my new hard drive gaving me the right info

OK you gave me the information that I needed (amt of space that would be saved) which was not much space. I think that you are doing about right with space. HD space is being used with system restore points etc. You will see more and more space being used by system restore points as the days go by.

How large is your back up drive?

Re: is my new hard drive gaving me the right info

You should. Go to search, type computer, Once you see it, drag to your desktop.

It is a source of information about your computer, that should be handy.

Get the computer on your desktop. It will show your drives (partitions)

You may have a recovery drive and a backup drive. Lets see.

Re: is my new hard drive gaving me the right info

well am sorry but this is to advance for me to do .
now i did install a brand new hard drive [500] one month ago on this same computer and instaled window 7 on it .
now on my w-7 drive i did use [67] of space all ready .
so on my new drive with vista on it i use [73 ] all ready .
so i thing it is about right because i di install more stuff on vista then window 7 .
so now if i want to use w-7 all i do is turn my pc off and change the red cable from the vista drive to the window drive .no daul boot for me .cant not setup .
to dum.i will use vista 95 % of the time anyway .
now on a [250] drive that stop working one month ago i only use [82] of space running vista from 2007 till a month ago .
now why that i use [73 ]in a week only with all the same install that i had on my old drive ..
i will let it go for now .
if that don't do i buy a 500 drive that all .70.00

Re: is my new hard drive gaving me the right info

I understand that some of this is new for you, everyday, I learn, too.

Try this, it is easy. In search just type computer. When you see the computer just right click and then click on open. You will see all of your partitions (drives) and how much space each is using.

What I am telling you will work for both Vista and Windows 7. But not that important. It would just would be nice to know where the hard drive space is being used.

A drive marketed as 250GB actually has a capacity of 232GiB. This is because they are sold with their decimal capacity rather than their binary capacity.

So let's start with 232GiB. Vista itself will take up 15GiB, leaving 217GiB. By default, a paging (or swap) file and a hibernation file are automatically created, the size of each of those is equivalent to the amount of memory in your system. You haven't stated the amount of memory you have, so I am going to say 2GiB. This takes the total down to 213GiB. A full installation of Works 2006 is 3GiB. Total now 210GiB. By default, System Restore occupies 10% of your HDD capacity, so this accounts for 23GiB. The new total is now 187GiB. System drivers that are not built-in to Vista can account for another 1GiB. This leaves a total of 186GiB.

If you don't use hibernation, you can turn off that feature, saving 2GiB. New total now 188GiB.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/165508-hibernation-enable-disable.html

You can also reduce the amount of space allocated to System Restore, or even turn it off altogether. Potential saving: upto 23 GiB. If you disable System Restore, your new total will be 211GiB. I recommend that you allocate 5% to this (12GiB). With this allocation, your new total will be 199GiB.
