Solved Difficult to delete folder.

Hi to everyone who reads this.

I encountered a few folders on my pc that I can't seem to get rid off.
One is located at; C:\Program Files (x86)\Mafia and the other one;
C:\Users\Carlo\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Mafia

Mafia is a game that a friend of mine tried to install recently and I didn't payed to much notion on it when he was at it. Only afterwards I asked him how it went and he said that my operating system didn't support the game and had to delete it.
It was only a few days later that I noticed that there were 2 folders who seemed to be left behind, so I tried to delete them.
But I got this message:

"Cannot find this item"
"This item isn't any longer on C:\Program Files (x86). Check the location and try again."

The same goes for that other above mentioned location.

Isn't odd that I can see the folder, but when I'm tryin to delete it my pc says that this item isn't there anymore??

I tried shift-delete, and with an application that claims to get rid of such kind of folders, but unfortunately it doesn't help.
I also did a sfc and chkdsk but those folders are stil there.

Does anyone have a clue to dispose those stubborn folders?

Thanks for reading this thread and for your potential adequate answer.
Best regards Carlo

Hi Richard

After hours of trying in many different ways I'm back with dissapointing results.
First let me sum up what I've done so far:
- Restore Registry Settings: applied "Fix_Rename_64_Bit_Vista.reg file"
- Can not rename, move, cut or Unlock because the message says: This item isn't in this location. (roughly translated from Dutch) and there are no files to Unlock.
- Can not "Take Ownership" of that folder because on the Security Tab there's no information available. see screenshot called Corrupt Mafia, (whats in the name hé)
- RD and RMDIR /S /Q "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mafia"
(tried that several times with other combinations),
"Can not find the path specified" was the result each time.
- Tried in Safe Mode with prompt.
- '' '' with ERD Commander boot from CD Drive, than in Explorer and Prompt.
- '' '' '' '' Kill Explorer and the same with Log Off.
- '' '' '' '' Acronis True Image to exclude that folder but I could only select files. Didn't see an option to navigate to a certain folder to exclude it. Though I had the opportunity to include a "Mask" but if I'm correct thats only for files.
Like this; *Mafia or *\Mafia.
- I can't delete the uppercase folder because that is Program Files.
(Unless its safe to copy everything, except that folder, than delete Program Files and replace it with that copy, or is this not possible?)

- One thing I couldn't do was "Rename or move during next boot", because the explanation wasn't clear to me. They adviced me to "Create a multi-text value in" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
But I don't know who to do this. I can navigate to this place in regedit, but who do I make multi-text value?
Don't even know if this method could work, if so can you give me better and more clear instruction on how to do that? Or if you have other tricks in your sleeve...

Thats all for now mate, need some time away from this screen and cool off.
Goodnight and I see you later...

Regards Carlo

Hi OrangeAngel

Yes, the translation is spot on.
I was getting tired last night and wrapped it up in a hurry.
You must be facing the same problem because you could translate that specific problem?!

It would be even greater if you knew a solution to my problem though.
Any suggestions?

Best regards Carlo

Witten i've never run into this problem, only with a few desktop shortcuts saying they can't delete it cause the computer cant find it, All i do is restart and they're usually gone, but i've never had this with any folders. well actually once and i used the unlocker. Then deleted it and it worked.

Hi Richard

Just did it in Safe Mode and each time I get the same result;
"System cannot find the path or item".

I'll post some screenshots, although there in Dutch again, but basically they say what I mentioned in the above sentence.

Any other suggestions mate?

Hi Richard

If you mean that I have to ttry it with Unlocker, wel than I can give you the answer right now, because I did that yesterday and it didn't help.
The folder I'm trying to delete is empty so there no files blocking it.

I'm not being procrastinate but I'll come back next year to see if someone replied...

Happy 2011

Thats out of the order because I recently deleted all but the last one.

Funny thing, I just tried with a file/folder shedder tool and while I can navigate in this program to the location were I see the corrupted Mafia folder, but when I select it the program returns a warning saying that the specific folder doesn't exist. Yet I can clearly see it. And "no" I'm not tipsy... (yet)

Hi,

Try deleting the folder by booting into DOS.

CD "C:\Users\Carlo\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"
RD Mafia

Or run this file in DOS (Not Windows): - That should do the trick!

Hi Lottiemansion

Thanks for the reply, but I have a few questions about it.
You told me to:
- "Try deleting the folder by booting into DOS."
(Do you mean a Safe boot with prompt?)

- "Or run this file in DOS (Not Windows)"
(how do I run a file in DOS? Can you give me step by step instructions?)

In any case many thanks for the bat file you made, but I'll wait until you give me clear instructions on how to implement that.
Sorry for my ignorance...

Happy new year!!

Hello again & a happy New year to you too.

Yes.

Boot into Safe mode with DOS & run the file I posted.

That should remove the folder for you.

Hi Lottiemansion

I booted in Safe Mode and used this command:
CD "C:\Users\Carlo\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"
RD Mafia
"The system cannot find the path specified"

Than I tried this:
C:\Users\Carlo\Desktop/Mafia.bat
"with the same result"

I doon't even know if that above command is coorect, I improvised a bit, because I'm not used doing this.
In a desperate attempt I invoked Explorer, and try to run the bat as admin, but that didn't help either.

Any other ideas mate?

Just detected another Mafia folder, this time it is located at C:\Windows.
There was an uninstaller in this folder, clicked it and I got a warning.
It was oviously a leftover file so I tried to delete this folder via shift-delete.
The folder was still there but that file was gone.
Than I tried to remove the folder again and I got the usual message:
"System cannot find this item".

I did find that folder via a search in regedit, and I'm cotemplating if its ok to delete any entries with Mafia in it?
