updated laptop hdd problems?

hi

i installed some updates on my laptop last night (acer aspire 5315)
and after installing and restarting to finish configuring updates. upon re start it became unresponsive the mouse could move but could not select anything could not open start menu or anything like that then the screen (laptop output to tv) and the latop screen went (as if it had gone to sleep) however the laptop was still running as indicator lights were still flashing wifi etc.

so i powered off (power button) and restarted (when powered back on HDD made lots of scratchy noises) and the same happened it was unresponsive? so powered off again and started in safe mode then using the start menu i clicked restart and after restart it booted & was back working as should?
it also made a funny noise a couple of nights ago .(sounded a bit like the old dial up internet conecting sound) coming from the HDD. and the movie i was watching froze but then re-started. so dident think much of it?
so this morning i ran crystal disk info and this is what it reported see enclosed screen shot. is there any way of fixing/repairing it or is it new hard drive time?

thanks

Always have all your stuff backed up.
Reallocated secector count usually means that problems in clusters were found but were moved so that they would not be used again. The OS, can do this a few times but after a while it will no longer solve the problem.
Run the chkdsk and see what it says.
Then go to the website of your Hard Drive Manufacturer and take their test.
If you fail the Chkdsk, but it says that it was repaired but you fail the Website test, time for a new drive.
Back up your stuff, and did I mention, back up your stuff, now.

I think that the updates froze your computer, and with the forced shutdown damage was done to 4 clusters. This is normal and does not require a new HD. Normal but not good as Chkdsk can correct this only a few times.

I suggest that you download Karens Replicator and make the back ups easily.
The chkdsk will not hurt your HD, unless it already has serious problems.

The answer depends on what you want to do.
If you want to reinstall, you just back up your stuff.
If you want to transfer everything to another hard drive Macrium may be the best way to go. It is the easiest.
May I suggest back up your stuff with Karens replicator, too. Just in case you cant get Macrium to work when you want to use it on the new hard drive.

Karens is just an easy way to make the back up. I use it and its even automatically done on schedule.
Any back up that you have is fine, you do not need Karens. As I said Karens is not a back up, just a way to make a back up.

Macrium does mine in less than 15 minutes. It is really fast.
Creating the recovery media is a pain. You must download software from Microsoft and that takes about 45 minutes. The acutal recovery media is very fast. Lets say 5 minutes.
Use an image.

so is macrium likely to fail then? does it do that often? or would it be due to user error that it might happen?

It has saved me twice. I have never had a problem. That being said, you may not do it properly or other unexpected problems may occur. Just have the back up of your Farther's stuff, just to be on the safe side.

as for media when we were discussing the other day on macrium i think it was WHS said he had the waik file i think its called on sky drive. would it be best to downlo from microsoft or would his be better if ii can ind that link he provided again?

ok so in the event hard drive failed. and had to install a new blank hard drive i could : use the recovery cd to boot into winpe (is that right?) then whilst in winpe mode use that to restore the macrium backup image stored on external drive that i create.

have i got that about right?

thanks

You can use the one on Skyline, that will save a bit of time. Other than that either is fine.
ok so in the event hard drive failed. and had to install a new blank hard drive i could : use the recovery cd to boot into winpe (is that right?) then whilst in winpe mode use that to restore the macrium backup image stored on external drive that i create.

That is correct. BUT test the recovery CD while things are still good. Make sure that you get access to the images. You do not have to use the image.

have i got that about right?

thanks

I think that answers everything.

ok thanks rich thats brilliant.

im just about to start the nti back up now. then i will hunt down the waik file
download install macrium create the recovery disc then image then test recovery see if i can locate images
(you say images is that the one i create plus my currently installed os?) or if i only create one image only one will appear?)

if all is ok with image if recory recognises it etc (can or should i give it a test run!)

then if all goes well with those steps run chk disc see if it repairs the hdd damage.

thanks again for all your help could not have done it without ur help. i really apreciate it thankyou
