1066Mhz vs 800Mhz memory ram.

(For now i play dead space and bioshock at 1080p resolution+full antialiasing+vsync+max details\graphics\visuals (i always play games with everything in max settings) I like to have the best results in graphics!!)

Will i be able to perform the above with only 2GB ram or will i need more memory?
i mean setting the game to the maximum graphic settings

I wouldn't recommend less than 4GB.

My Computer

Ok seriously, if you guys googled his motherboard you would have found your answer.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm, had he posted his system specs when he posted his question, and before I attempted to answerer his question, "my" answer to him “might” have been a bit more firm. Without system specs, it's only speculation.

At any rate he basically got the same answer. :)

but if in the future you plan on adding more ram, you might want to go with 1x4gb and add another down the road so you can utilize your memory controller's dual channel ability

Huh??? Maybe I'm missing something ...Please explain???

Dual channel doubles the bandwidth of memory, so 800MHz in single channel would be 64GB/s, and dual channel would effectively double this, which would be the same bandwidth as DDR3 memory in single channel, but most PC's, and anyone who knows what they're doing when building a computer uses dual channel anyway.

I understand that, the poster who posted the above answer may not have. Thus my "Huh???" Maybe I should have included an explaination :)

You may see a small increase but as I said, I'm not sure the small gain is worth the money for a good set of DDR2 1066Mhz RAM.
Increase?How?Where?in which way?
Thanks!

Memory increases don't always show up in FPS (frames Per Second), but it could show up in other applications like math calculations, office docs, or photo editing programs. Thus it would depend on the application(s) as to how much of a benefit you'd see between 800MHz and 1066MHz.

Since your board supports 1066, I would get it instead. As for price, I don't think it's that much more expensive then 800MHz, certainly not double or near it in price. Where the cost tends to creep up is with regards to CAS timings, basically how fast the memory exchanges data. 5-5-5-15 vs 4-4-4-12

When looking at memory prices, keep the CAS timing in mind. Example 1066MHz @5-5-5-15 would be cheaper then 1066MHz @ 4-4-4-12, or 800MHz @4-4-4-12 could be just as expensive as 1066MHz @5-5-5-15. You also have to consider name brand as well.

Hope that helps.

yes the prices will differ between frequency & timing, & after a quick look there is a clear choice here...

6400 crucial Tracers

8500 kingston

notice the quality of the 6400s compared to the cheapest 8500s i could find, also note the timings on the two sets....

the 6400s win hands down, the price of 8500 is still pretty high....;)

A better price comparison between quality name brand memory. Note that the dominator’s are of a higher quality then the XMS2’s, though the XMS2’s are very good modules and are just a step below the dominators.

At any rate here’s the price comparison:

4 Gig Corsair PC6400 (4-4-4-15) - Corsair Dual Channel 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 2048MB) TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX at TigerDirect.com 64.99

4 Gig Corsair PC8500 (5-5-5-15) – Corsair Dominator Dual Channel 4096MB PC8500 DDR2 1066MHz Memory (2 x 2048MB) TWIN2X4096-8500C5D at TigerDirect.com 59.99

Even though the 6400 (800MHz) has lower timings, it’s slower than the PC8500 (1066MHz). Being that the PC8500 is running at a higher clock speed, the higher timings are comparable to the 6400’s lower timings because of the 1066MHz speed of the PC8500.

Since your board can take 1066MHz modules you would get better performance with that memory as 800MHz would be a step down.

Good luck.

Uh... Don't you already have 4GB of 800Mhz? If so, theres no reason reason to buy more unless you want and can take advantage of 8GB.

Either way, thats cheap RAM, and typically cheaper RAM isn't made for gaming or have any overclocking ability.

this is simply not true...... run some test yourself, you'll see im telling the truth.

i had a 4gb set of GSKILL HZ 6400s (what great sticks, till they died :o) these sticks would do 1160mhz @ 5-5-5-15, & they still were not as responsive (as reported by ''SISoft sandra'') as the same sticks running 830mhz @ 4-4-4-12

BELIEVE ME .....the extra 266mhz is useless IMO, the difference between 800s & 1066 frequencies is NO WHERE NEAR the difference between CL4 & CL5

the only reason i would EVER buy 1066 sticks (personally) would be to push a 500fsb @ a 1-1 ratio, certainly not for the frequency boos alone.....;)

Btw i search but i cant find the timings.

I'd try to avoid value RAM if you're gaming.

A) Value RAM isn't made for high end gaming. High end games will stress the RAM more. Last time I tried it was prone to crashes.

B) It's pretty much just cheap RAM. Quality RAM comes with heatsinks built on and is worth paying that bit more for better reliability.

C) It is, but high end gaming is going to stress it more.

The timings on that RAM too that you linked are CL5. If you want high end gaming, you'd want to be looking at CL4 800MHz.

Yea the Kingston HyperX will be better. CL5 is better, but the lowest you'll be seeing RAM at when buying it is CL7. The higher the frequency, the looser the timings become e.g. they get higher.

Have a look at Corsair XMS2 800MHz too if you can. I'm using the 667MHz XMS2 and overclocked it to 750MHz and I've never had any problems when gaming with it.

I wouldn't really look at 1066MHz, though. Only reason I'd get it is for the same reason as Skunk, and that's to get a 1:1 ratio with a 500fsb.

Even though the 6400 (800MHz) has lower timings, it’s slower than the PC8500 (1066MHz). Being that the PC8500 is running at a higher clock speed, the higher timings are comparable to the 6400’s lower timings because of the 1066MHz speed of the PC8500.
this is simply not true...... run some test yourself, you'll see im telling the truth.

i had a 4gb set of GSKILL HZ 6400s (what great sticks, till they died :o) these sticks would do 1160mhz @ 5-5-5-15, & they still were not as responsive (as reported by ''SISoft sandra'') as the same sticks running 830mhz @ 4-4-4-12

We'll agree to disagree agreeably. :)

Look at the image/video encoding and gaming performance - there's next to no difference between them.

... but the lowest you'll be seeing RAM at when buying it is CL7. The higher the frequency, the looser the timings become e.g. they get higher.

Unless he goes for the Corsair, as posted earlier :)

I'd rather spend less and get CL4 than spend more for CL5 for a small difference :p

Agreed - as long as it friendly :)

I'm also a member of Corsair forums and thought I saw something like that there as well, but couldn't find it.

Just trying to provide the best info.

Peace.
