64bit Java released!

It seems Sun Microsystems have begun supporting 64bit versions of Windows including 64bit Firefox and 64bit Internet Explorer as of the 8th of December 2008

The JDK beta release has the 64-bit plugin, You can download it from here: Java Platform, Standard Edition 6u12 Binary Snapshot Releases

Edit:
You can test your 64bit Java with your 64bit browser here: Test whether Java is working on my computer - 1.5.0, 1.6.0

The other tools the JDK installs can be separately removed if your only after the plugin ;)

Ahhh, that's where i got my wires cross. I'm used to everything coming to Linuxville last! Makes a change!

So i can run 64 bit Firefox with 64 bit flash AND java in Linux now? Mint! Finally have little reason not to go back to Ubuntu x64

It does seem a strange thing to release for linux 64 first given the percentage of Windows 64 users is larger than linux, but i'm not going to complain given Linux will likely be stuck with the Alpha for a looong time.

Wrong - 64bit *nix users have been a lot more mainstream than 64bit Windows users - I mean, let's face it, until Vista came out (2 years ago) there was a very, very low demand for x64 - because driver support was fairly non-existent in Windows.

*nix weren't quite so tied down by that problem, as your everyday *nix developer could easily write up his own patches and submit them for review and get hardware working fast, provided they have enough knowledge on how to do so.

It does seem a strange thing to release for linux 64 first given the percentage of Windows 64 users is larger than linux, but i'm not going to complain given Linux will likely be stuck with the Alpha for a looong time.

Not wanting to change topic, but credit were its due plus I can't resist this. I think its great that the linux community came first for a change, after all 64bit linux has been around for a long time. If microsoft had reacted early enough, then we would probably also be browsing in x64 with flash, :p

It came about because Adobe simply couldn't get their heads wrapped around 64bit for Windows fast enough, but they knew they had a worldwide resource when it came to developing 64bit Flash for *nix - namely, 64bit *nix users worldwide.

You have to admit that for debugging and testing *NIX systems are better. Even then, the quality of the feedback could be quite higher as opposed to have released a Windows alpha version.

Nevertheless, the Flashplugin works a lot better than I had expected (considering the previous Flash 10 betas). Is this Java x86-64 actually functional? I never liked Java for some reason, but this looks primising.

Also, I've had no troubles with FF plugins working on the x86-64 version. Check if it ain't just a version issue and not an architecture issue.

64 bit FF was definitely faster and more responsive on my system. That being said I had to revert back to a 32 bit browser because most of the FF
addons
that I tried installing were not compatible with 64 bit FF.

Hey Itjunkie,

You need this addon for X64 Firefox to install them X32 addons ;) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6543

I use the Nightly Tester Tools addon to force install all the addons in X64 FF, If the button to add an addon isn't available just click "See all versions" on the Firefox addons site to install it, then click Force Install ;)

hi dmex are you saying the flash addon can be forced to install in minefield

cheers brad

64bit firefox?Where i can find it?

Hey Panais,

64bit Firefox can be downloaded here: Download - Mozilla x86-64

The latest version is: Firefox-3.1b2pre.en-US.win64.installer.20081026.zip‎ (click to download ;))

There are 3 diff programs on this website. ( For 64 bit ) do I need to download all 3?
Thanks

You just need the Windows x64 self-extracting JDK file: jdk-6u12-ea-bin-b02-windows-amd64-p-08_dec_2008.exe

JDK will install two updates, the first being Java 6 Update 12 (64bit) this contains the 64bit java plugin for 64bit browsers, the second will install the Java SE Development kit (64bit) this can be uninstalled after if your only after the plugins ;)

The JDK components are unfortunately restricted from distribution so I cant host just the plugin for everyone to download until it gets released as JRE, I will try find a separate release not including the development kit ;)

Is that official mozila firefox website?
And if that is 64bit why when i install firefox-3.1b2pre.en-US.win64.installer
the default directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Minefield\??
Thanks!

I just did a fresh install on my family PC and now when I try to load a java app nothing happens. No little java icon appears or anything. My Firefox and java are up to date and I do have java enabled. I've reinstalled several times and the program appears to be installed properly. I've tried the 64 bit Firefox and Java but the game my kids want to play (RuneScape) loads and plays for about 5 seconds until the jagex cache folder creates itself in my hard drive. Any suggestions?

My Computer

Hi Bigm2793,

Just thinking that this may be a permissions problem, the program creating a folder needs to have permission to write to a folder before it may create other files or folders.

Right click on the folder in which the jagex cache folder is created and check that all users playing the game have full permissions on the folder. If that cache folder is created you may want to also check the permissions on this folder are also full for each user.

This may be a complete red herring, but is worth checking as lack of permissions will prevent the correct temporary files being created and thus prevent the game from running correctly.

unfortunately, with the changes to the permissions allocated by default in Vista things that were assumed in previous OS's are no longer true.

If this does not help please post back and I'm sure someone more qualified with the Gaming side of vista will be able to guide you further

Thanks all. I had to run the java installation through the hidden administrator account to get it to work. Btw that account owns so if you don't have it, get it.

My Computer

Hi Bigm2793,

Good to hear you have things working

Yes the Hidden Administrator is very powerful, almost too powerful in-fact, I would advise against using this as your default user, as doing so will negate most of the new security features in Vista over XP.

I always recommend that all installs are performed in Vista by right clicking the installer and selecting "Run as administrator" which should work for most situations.

If you are going to keep the Hidden Administrator active I would ensure that you allocate a Strong password at the very least.

Just my opinion ;)

Is it recommended to install the Vista x64 Version of Mozilla Firefox (Currently running the normal 32bit? Version).

Is there a way to switch my Favourites/Passwords to the 64bit version?

Is there any advantage if i switch? Faster? Or ?

Your bookmarks and passwords are kept. Same as trying custom builds or betas, you don't lose your data. Although, some plugins may no longer work.
Although it's always suggested to backup and start with a new profile, just in case.

The advantage of 64bits? Could be the same as using a custom build of the browser (like SS2 instead of generic), maybe a bit faster... or smooth behavior. I haven't really compared them.

You can check a comparison here:
Firefox 32bits vs 64bits
There are many more arround, google is your friend.

Hey Guys,

You need to download the JDK not the JRE release, it has the 64-bit plugin...This is for IE 64bit and Firefox 64bit all versions...You can test your 64bit Java with your 64bit IE/Firefox browser here: Test whether Java is working on my computer - 1.5.0, 1.6.0

Hi Steven,

The download for jre offline version works as well,

It normally just needs to restart the browser after install, if it is not working after this just follow the instructions for fault finding on the web site and search for java on your computer which it will find with a message something like found java ***** this is newer than.......... After this a restart of the browser is required and it works
