No, you can call Microsoft and order a recovery DVD for $25, if you are in the window of time to do it. When you boot, hit F8 go into safe mode command prompt and run chkdsk c:/r. Log in with your administrator account.

then it has opitons of what to choose.

safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
enable boot logging
enable low resolution video
last know good confermation(advanced)
directory services restore modde
debugging mode
disable automatic restart on system failure
diasable drivier signutare enforcement
start windows normally

which one should i choose i don't want to mess anything up any more then it is i'm guessing the safe mode but want to make sure before i do it??

I would run chkdsk c:/r before doing a repair. If the drive is physically damaged, chkdsk can get it to boot.

ok i did repair and i got a message i got this same message earilier when i tryed repair it says
windows has encontered a problem with a device connected to your computer.
this error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external usb drive whie the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or cd-rom drive that is failing. make sure the removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer.

i got this message before and i did have a flash drive in when the computer was frezzeing and not working so i did plug it in and restarted the computer but it did nothing. so i guessing my hard drive is probably bad?

All your data you want to save is already on the D: drive (which is a seperate HDD, correct?)

Open up your notebook, remove the bad drive, replace it with the other drive (D volume)

then boot into Paragon, create a partition large enough for Vista (I would go with half the capacity of the drive mark as C: reboot, borrow a Vista disk , and re-install and enter your product key. (if you have SATA drives you will need to insert your App/driver disk that came with your HP, at installation, and navigate it to the SATA/RAID driver)

If you are still under warranty, contact HP, and send the defective HDD back, and get a replacement.

I dont think that is true. He has an OEM recovery Partition/HP recovery Disk(s).

Microsoft will not touch this- unless he pays for tech support. They will then tell him that He must call his OEM for replacement disks.

My Lenovo has the recovery partition, I can still call Microsoft within 90 days and order a recovery media kit for it for $25. Otherwise, the manufacturer sends out a new hard drive with his recovery partition on it.

He did a test that showed a bad hard drive. chkdsk c:/r might recover it long enough to back up.

Microsoft does this to prevent piracy. It is a pain. Just let my vendor sell me a media kit.

Hi if you try this, it will be really be helpful for you:
Boot to WIN RE and open command prompt.
go to C:\
type chkdsk /f/r/b
then type fixboot
exit cmd.exe and Restart the system.

/r include /f. /r is all he needs. It is the full repair mode. It can take hours to run.

He may not have the know how to replace/fix his sytem. I cant even get him to tell me the Model #. Perhaps, before he opens his system (possibly voids Warranty- the HDD's might not be User accessable and may require removal of keyboard) he should just call HP on his new Notebook, and have it serviced. I think this would be the best advice we can now give him.

If it was me, I would just replace the HDD, and buy a OEM system Builder Version of x64 Ultimate, and restore from file backups/images, but then again my HDD's (in RAID 0) are meant to be User accessable.

sorry i was away but i will call hp and see what they can do what i realy want to do though is just fix my laptop and then sell it. i would rather buy a new one that works better this laptop has jsut givein me trouble since i got it. so in that case if accessing the hdd is gunna void warranty i may buy a whole new hdd to replace maybe bigger and then sell my computer if hp can't help or if i have to pay for a replacement

This is a walkthrough to remove/replace the Pavilion dv9000 Primary hard (Ist-the bad one).
Replacing drive it will not void warrranty- Drives are User Accessable.

Note- you do have a SATA HDD (see above post #30 for partitioning 2nd HDD for Vista Install), and Post #13 for compatable HDD upgrades to replace defective Drive.
You will be removing both HDD's, and taking the 2nd HDD and moving it to the 1st HDD location (2nd HDD caddy will then be empty). Use the partitioning software, to configure Drive, and Install Vista. All Data on the Drive (i.e. your D: Drive Data will be perserved on the partition, and you will be creating a new Vista Partition. You can then change the drive letters If you want (I would mark the new partition as C: )

For $60 dollars he can buy 320GB 7200RPM new HDD- this is most likely a higher capacity then his current bad HDD
He can then return the defective HDD to HP for replacement, then sell it, or but a $7 2.5" sata/usb enclosure and use it as a external DATA/Backup drive

Borrow a Vista x64 DVD
All the data he said he wants to perserve is on the good (d drive- which can be partitioned for the new Vista install)
He doesnt lose data, switching the HDD's are easy, And I provided a walkthrough to partition and Install Vista. He can be up and running in no time. his call though.

ok well im on the phone now with hp they are going to pick up my computer and bring it to there service center to fix whatever is wrong with it.
