The only thing I see greyed out in your screenshot is the permissions. That's normal. You would have to select a User and then Edit to change that.

If you go to the Control Panel, User Accounts, does the user you're logged in as have Administrator priveledges?

I wonder if you may need to change the permissions on the C: itself. It's confusing to me because when I go to the C: properties, I don't have full control but I can change the Documents folder properties.

My registry doesn't look like yours. The only users shown is the Administrator despite the fact that the Security tab shows Users (Bob-PC\users) and the Administrators (Bob-PC\Administrator). I never created a user other than the defaults created when you install Windows.

Defrag just finished, finally.

Wither3, I did as you suggested and created an new adm. account. When I tried logging in with this new account I got the following message:
The User Profile failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

I then went and loaded another adm. account I already had (the one I spoke of previously that has no files in the documents folder but does have all the buttons (including Move) and which also allows me to edit the target box), and got this message:
Your User Profile was not loaded correctly. You have been logged on with the Default Profile for the system.

Obviously got a problem here with User Profiles which is most likely the source of my problems.

Will still go ahead now and try Brink's tutorial solution, which I hope proves to be the solution for my particular user account but probably will do nothing with respect to my other user profile accounts that I have been receiving error messages on. I'm more convinced now that it has all to do with the settings in the registry on user accounts. At least that's my unedumacated guess. :-)

My Computer

Just made an interesting discovery. With my remaining User Accounts:

User #1.JPG

I found that my account Administrator John Prince is not the Default User Account for it gives you the option to delete this account:

User#2.JPG

Whereas the Administrator account does not:

User#3.JPG

Could this not be the problem?

My Computer

I should have added this Administrator Profile (image #3) is also the one I spoke of in an earlier post:

"I then went and loaded another adm. account I already had (the one I spoke of previously that has no files in the documents folder but does have all the buttons (including Move) and which also allows me to edit the target box), and got this message:

It appears that you have other issues at play as well.

You might consider doing a clean install of Vista to start fresh again. :(

I don't believe that is necessary at this stage (maybe a little overkill, never mind a lot of work). Obviously, we've tracked down the problem. Just need someone who knows how to fix this, that's all. Got to be a registry setting dealing with profiles.

My Computer

My user accounts look just like yours in the first screenshot. All are created by Vista during installation. The one with your name on it is the name of your computer. Personally, I think you should do a system restore to get that account back unless you follow Brink's advice and reinstall Vista.

Thanks for your help guys but I think I'll just plug along and see if I can figure it out. If not, I guess I'll just leave the folders where they are until forced by ms to do an upgrade or when I can more afford it, whichever comes first. Thanks again! Your efforts on my behave were appreciated. ;-)

My Computer

I still think you should do a system restore (not reinstall) to get that account back. Without it, you're going a step backwards and it may affect other things.

If you figure it out, let us know.

wither 3, I have no restore disks or partition for such and no vista disk came with my oem computer, so my options are limited. Even though I know what you and Brink are suggesting is the right course of action to follow my hands are tied. :-(

My Computer

I believe that Wither is referring to a restore point not a backup or system restore. That is a good suggestion however I agree with Brink. You have some bigger issues going on that could lead to system instability later on. In the mean time if you want your personal documents in another drive or partition you can manually move them and place shortcuts to those folders. You don't have to have them in the documents referenced by the profile.

I'm curious as to those screenshots where you showed the option of deleting a profile. Which profile where you using at the time? For obvious reasons windows will not allow you to delete the profile that you logged in as or any profile that is currently logged in. However there is an indication of corruption somewhere if new accounts won't load. If you have problems in your registry preventing you from logging into the other admin account or any new account you might one day find out that you can't log into any account. Keep that in mind when considering Brink's advice to perform a new install. It may take a lot of time but wouldn't it be worth it to do so now to ensure system stability? If you eventually lose the ability to log into any profile at that time more than likely you will have to perform a new install.
