I always got the 32bit version of IE as default on any Vista installation I've done.

But no worries, flash64 is already on its way (alpha)... I'm using it right now and it works pretty well. Some issues with fullscreen but it's ok.

Dinesh,

What exactly is the purpose of your post? Is it to show that flash works under Vista 64? Is it to show that it can be run in Internet Explorer 64-bit?

I’m not exactly sure what it is you’re trying to “solve”? It’s widely known that flash DOES NOT work under Internet Explorer 64-bit…even Adobe has confirmed it. So what magic solution do you have?

At any rate I just tried your procedure again, and as I suspected, nothing happened…, because…I already have flash installed…under IE-32.

Here’s the facts – Under Vista 64, you can install flash on the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer by simply going to adobe’s website (Adobe - Adobe Flash Player), just as you would do on any other OS.

All your procedure does is create extra steps and confusion, which could be avoided by understanding that flash does not support IE-64, and the program can be installed more efficiently by visiting Adobe’s website and either download or installing the latest version from there. Plus you’ll know immediately if the program failed or not.

My concern is that you’re creating misunderstanding, confusion, frustration, and extra work.

Incidentally the flash utility you mention (FlashUtil9b) is an older version of flash. I have version 10a, which just happens to be the version I have installed on IE-32 under Vista 64!

Yes, your procedure works, but unless the user uses IE-32, they won’t see that your procedure worked, (on IE-32), because they’ll be expecting see the results on IE-64!

So again, what is the purpose of your post?

Just trying to avoid any misunderstandings.

Thanks.

Oh really!!!
i work for Dell as the Vista subject matter expert and have found that all your above mentioned idea has failed on many x64 based computers and then my workaround comes in handy.
maybe you tried your ideas onto your machine and it worked but you cannot assume that everyone can have the same ease in installing a flash player from Adobe on a x64 based system.
you are also right that its for IE-32 for an x64 vista system. but there are many people who cannot use the flash player even for their IE-32 browser on an x64 based system...
I think this workaround is for those people...
May be its not for techies like you.
But my purpose of this post is people cannot play youtube videos on a IE-32 on x64 system. So its for those who could not install flash on their systems...
This way, atleast they can have a browser with flash plugin.

My notebook is HP TX2000. I could not see FlashUtil9b.
But I saw and runned
FlashUtil9f. It didn't work anyway.

Now, I am using Mozilla firefox and it works well with flash player.

@ Dinesh,

Vista 64 Ultimate has two versions of Internet Explorer, one 32-bit and one 64-bit version! If you use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer, YES, you can install flash, even on a 64-bit OS. I don't understand what so hard to grasp here. If people are having problems installing flash on their 32-bit based IE, then the problem is elsewhere and has nothing to do with Vista 64. The method I, and many other has use to install flash, is nothing special, it just works the way it's supposed to under IE-32. It's not like I did any thing special or have a "special version of Vista Ultimate 64"

BTW, I’m not a "techie" – I don't "work for Dell as the Vista subject matter expert" like you do - I’m just a hobbyist who builds my own systems. :)

@ KrossX, and Darkassin,

Under my Vista 64 Ultimate, Internet Explorer 64 was in fact my default browser. This happened on 3 different installs involving Vista 64 Ultimate. All you have to do is look at "Help" then "About".

I'm still unable to use flash in IE 64 bit after updating flash to version10th.
However, I can use them in IE32 and Firefox.

That's OK because I've already given up to fix this problem.
There are many other problems to do with Vista.

My Computer

I know how to check wich version of IE is running. And I can tell for sure that the default IE on the installations I've done is always the 32bit one.

For example: This one.

I always end up using the 64bit version manually just to check mails though, and only when Hotmail is broken on Firefox.

@pinyohiso: That's because there's currently NO flash64 plugin for Windows.

Yeh, Previously I used IE-32 as my default browser. But I experienced frequent error.
So, I decided to use the Mozilla as the default.

However, I had to install additional program to automatically run mozilla when I open hotmail inbox.

My Computer

its not worth it really...:p
i just thought it was a misunderstanding....:)
as most people i know are running vista x64 and think they are running 64 IE as default....;)

have a good day too

You say tamoto, I say tomato - it's all the same, however, whether "you" agree or not, my fact still remains that on the installs "I" did using Vista 64 Ultimate, IE64 was the default browser on my system.

OK, this maybe the bone of contention - I use a Logitech Wave keyboard which auto maps certain keys, including IE, by default it maps IE-64, that's why I say it defaults to 64. Hmmm...

No...I have not v-lited. - Actually, I take that back, this last install was from a v-lited disc created to slipstream SP1, and the only thing removed was the language packs to decrease size.

At any rate, I still disagree with Dinesh's procedures.

Have a good day.

what i wanted to show is by default (this is and official ms page)
well it doesnt matter.....;)

this is for other people that may have doubt....

Both versions of Internet Explorer share the default home page, the Favorites menu, and the Temporary Internet Files folder. By default, the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer runs when you start the browser from any one of the following locations:
  • The Quick Launch toolbar
  • The desktop
  • The Start menu
  • A hyperlink or a file type that is associated with Internet Explorer
Differences between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Internet Explorer that are included in the x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

like i said again...lol
have a good day sygnus
