GTA 4 Minimum Requirements

Even though I've got this on the 360, I was looking forward to a PC version because of mods. Looks like I'll stick with the 360 and it's overpriced DLC

It's a big release for Rockstar, so the patch will most likely be released next week.

while seaching the web I found this article:

"The PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV has to deal with some problems on its release. But Rockstar already is working on solutions and just provided PCGH with possible solutions for three bugs that have been identified.
Issue 1 - Fatal Error MMA10 on saving the game.

Possible Solution 1 - Sign out of the Rockstar Social Club, on starting the game skip the login . This allows the game to start. If you are connected to the internet, you will be prompted to login to Game For Windows Live (GFWL). If you login to this the game will save without issues.

However if you are not connected to the internet, GFWL has an offline mode. If you try to save at your safe house, it will advise you to login. From here choose YES and the game will appear to freeze for a second, hold down the Alt and press Tab to go back to your desktop. You will see the option to sign into GFWL Offline mode, do this and then ALT + Tab back into the game. This should allow you to save, although it may take you to the beginning of the game.

Possible Solution 2 - Install .net Framework 3.5, also unconfirmed but .net Framework 1.1 may need to be installed first.

Issue 2 - Graphical distortion using an NVIDIA 7900 video card

Solution - Install and use the latest beta driver for the 7 series video cards.
Rockstar explicitly points out that the use of Beta drivers is done at one's own risk

Windows XP (32 bit) - 180.70
Windows XP (64 bit) - 180.60
Windows Vista (32 bit) -180.60
Windows Vista (64 bit) - 180.60

Issue 3 - General crashes/freezes

Solution - Install all the latest updates for Windows. Including service packs (SP3 for XP and SP1 for Vista). Close background applications.
Update: 2008-12-04

Rockstar is trying to get all problems of the GTA 4 PC version solved as fast as possible. On the GTA 4 support site of Rockstar Games several issues and their solutions have been listed.

The only possible solution that I've heard may work is to defrag your hard drive once the install has finished (obviously!!!, wouldnt be a good idea to do it during the install no would it ). I havent had a chance to test it out yet but will do when i get home from work.

I'll give that a try when I get home as well.

You can add a couple of extra parameters to a shortcut by going to the GTA 4 directory and making a shortcut of LaunchGTAIV.exe and then adding "-norestrictions -nomemrestrict" without the quotes, to the end of the shortcut path.
This will allow you to change the graphic settings to what you want and improves performance a bit for me as well.

Though to get it running with the paremeters, you need to log in to Social Club first, then launch the shortcut you made manually.

My PC meets the requirements, only it recommends a quad core and I have a dual core, but even people with quad core extremes are getting low performance.

The problem is the game is too CPU dependant.

Do you mean in the target box? If so how exactly? I have tried it and it won't let me. I've tried after the end quotes and before but neither work.

Sorry scratch that. I worked it out. I missed out a space!! Ooops.

Grand Theft Auto IV by Rockstar Games

Apparently these drivers can fix some issues with the game. Found them on the Steam GTA forums. Some people seemed to have benefited from them, others either get worse performance or no difference. Not tried them myself yet though.

Apparently Rockstar and Nvidia are working together to optimise some drivers for the game.

Be careful using them drivers. A few people have experience a lot of graphic corruption even on the desktop when idle with them. I think they're mainly for 7900 graphic card users who are playing the game. So make sure you install them properly (uninstall current drivers>boot in to safe mode>driver sweeper>reboot and back in to safe mode>install drivers>reboot back to Windows)

A patch is going to be released in the next few days. Rockstar have the patch, but because the game is a Windows Live game, Microsoft need to approve of it being released.

I've installed it and I can comfortably play it at '360' standards. I've still got plenty of tweaking to do though. So far I haven't had any troubles with it, so it may affect nvidia cards more than ATI.

I also defragged the HD the day before and did it again after the GTA4 install and it was 8% fragmented just from the installation :p

    Samsung Story 2TB USB 3.0
I've got it running at 30fps average in game, that's pretty much with any setting as well, I had the textures on "High" and the Renderer on "Highest" with all the sliders around half, but then I saved and the memory leak kicked in and it just stuck at 15-20fps.

Hope Microsoft would hurry up and approve this patch.

I got mine runinng at 35-40fps :) there are some areas when it drops to 25-27, but very rarely... running on my LCD's native resoluion, textures on medium, renderer on highest, and the sliders just below half :)

even on medium settings the game still looks brilliant :D

It doesn't look brilliant. The particle system is messed up, shadows look horrible and there's no anti-aliasing.
