i found a disk labeled recovery disk, so i entered it and it came up restart for full restore or (somethin else..) to manage programs and drivers.

but when i restarted the laptop it came up with all the stuff to reset settings, but then said folder could not be copied

That is the DVD that came with the computer. It can help your repair or bring you back to factory settings. Dont know why it did not work.

i have two of them, labeled recovery disk 1 and 2. i shall try 2 in a minute.

how can i view the last updates that were installed on the laptop? i have googled a few things and it seems that could be the problem

Search (by start button)
Type update
Go to windows update
Left pane, check update history (or something like that meaning)

What I would do is back up your hard drive first, put it on an external drive. If you restore the system, it goes back to the day you brought the computer home. Every thing that you have done since day one is gone. You have no documents, updates etc.

i have a disk named "Your system and driver CD". i'm not sure if it is vista or not, but would this help in anyway?

You cannot just put CDs into the computer, without even being sure if it is the correct Operating System.

true.. it says on the CD : this CD contains a complete copy of all the drivers required for hardware devices on your machine, e.g Sound, Display, CD-ROM and Modems.

but i agree with you, i should be sure if it is for this laptop first.

If that is what is says, it is not what you are looking for. It is for the drivers to your hardware that came with the computer. Keyboard, mouse etc. Those drivers are outdated, now, anyway.

ok. at the moment, I am running one of my recovery disks, which is perfoming "VAIO Hardware Diagnostics", basically searching my hardware for problems

I found my back-up disk, began to repair vista, but it could not find a restore point. also, i opened command prompt and entered "net user administrator /active:yes" and "net user Guest administrator /:activeno" and they were completed succesfully, but if i do that after logging on it does not work. help?

Back up all doucments and reinstall the OS. You will need the key.

I run command prompt as admin, type "edit net user Guest" and it comes up with a 'new' command prompt. dont know what to do, does this change anything?

Just so I understand. You are telling me that you had an install DVD with the OS. You tried to install and it did not?
