Internet Problem

I have installed Vista and have internet after installing but I can't get on the internet. I don't remember how I did this before; can someone guide me.
I needed to install this so I can upgrade my BIOS.

What did you do to install internet? Are you getting it via a modem? What happens when you try to connect?

My hunch is that you don’t have a network issue but rather a “no decent browser” issue, particularly if you are trying to get on the internet with the built-in Internet Explorer, which might give you “cannot display the webpage” or other errors at many websites. What browser did you use on Vista before? The lack of browser support is one reason why hardly anyone is still running Vista. The last major browser to support Vista was the 32-bit build of Firefox 52.9.0, which is getting terribly old now. Some diehard users of Windows XP and Vista have resorted to fringe browsers from little-known developers, the latest of which is Supermium 119 for Vista SP2.

In order to install a third-party browser on a new installation of Vista, you will need to use a more recent OS with a decent browser to download and save an offline installer that is suitable for Vista, then transfer the file to the Vista system on removable media for installation there.

Hi, and thanks for responding. When I installed Vista I had internet down in the right corner in the tray, NOT a problem. The problem was IE7 would NOT see the outside internet world.

Hi, and thanks again for responding and your input, you are correct about the Browser, so I installed K-Meleon and Waterfox which worked out find in getting out to the outside internet world after making exceptions to Vista which bulked strongly by putting it on the exceptions list. I tried in vain to download a (.exe) copy of your suggestion of Firefox V. 52.9.0 but all of the sites wanted to give me the latest version instead or half way through the install would tell me their was a problem and would NOT complete the install. In any event I have update the BIOS which was my original goal.

Firefox 52.9 is no longer the way to go since it doesn't open some pages. I guessing that's because it's SHA-1. In this thread- What browser do you use?, one of the guys turned me on to 360Chrome which is much better but you have to put up with some chinese messages which you can get around. It also makes itself the default for some audio and video file formats but that can be changed. The guys also turned me on to supermium which is basically 360Chrome in all English. I've been using it a few days and was going to post my experience with it in the Browser section. My experience is that it takes a full 2 minutes or more to launch and is slow to open pages. If you try both of the browsers, I'd be interested in what you think you're preference is. I'm on the fence.

Thanks for the info Wither 3, I will look into this. Do you know where I can get a copy of IE 9 for Vista 32bit (.exe) File? I do believe this will cure most of my problems.

IE 9 won't do anything for you. It doesn't open a lot of pages. For instance I have IE 9 (without add-ons) but it won't access this forum or facebook (because it's not supported by facebook any longer).

If you want to try Firefox ESR v52.9.0 (the legacy Extended Support Release edition for Win XP and Vista released June 2018) the full offline installers for all languages and regions are available from Mozilla at https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/win32/. If you want the English-US version, for example, choose the EN-US directory to browse to Directory Listing: /pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/win32/en-US/ and download the Firefox Setup 52.9.0esr.exe installer. Note that you should use the 32-bit installer for both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista SP2 OSs.

Firefox ESR v52.9.0 browser has built-in support for H.264 for video playback (using Cisco's OpenH264 Video Codec) and will support the TLS 1.2 (but not the the latest TLS 1.3) protocol for connections to secure HTTPS sites with the default settings, while Internet Explorer 9 only supports the older (and less secure) TLS 1.0 protocol and cannot connect to most modern web sites . Most popular ad blocker extensions like uBlock Origin and Adblock Plus that are available on the official Firefox add-ons store are no longer compatible with Firefox ESR v52.9.0 but Bitldefender TrafficLight for Firefox v3.2.5 (rel. 23-Nov-2023) is still compatible with FF44 and higher and might provide a bit of added protection.

If you prefer using a browser based on Firefox you might want to try a newer browser like Fedor's "new" Mypal v68 that is listed in the Web Browser section of WinClient5270's Last Versions of Software for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in the MSFN Vista forum. The latest Mypal v68.13.7 (released 18-Nov-2023) is based on the Quantum engine of Firefox v68 (released 09-Jul-2019) and is still in beta but it is compatible with Win XP and Vista and is actively supported by the developer Fedor. See the Softpedia review <here> for Mypal v68. The latest Adblock Plus v3.17.1 (rel. 16-Jun-2023) extension is compatible with FF63 and higher so you should be able to install this ad blocker in Mypal v68. I can barely believe you have reposted that Chinese link even though your Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1 told you it gave you trojans! Modified versions of 360 can be found at MSFN. I was under the impression that this thread was solved, but here’s the Supermium link that you failed to post:

No, IE9 will not cure your problems. It was released in 2011, this is 2024. Do you actually intend to use Vista as a web-browsing platform? If not, then this discussion is becoming lengthy for no real reason.

Thank you all for your inputs and help. I did manage to finally get a ISO copy of FireFox V.52.9.0esr and installed it, works very well (Fast and Sold). I will now use this drive along with two other drives (Win7 and 10) to mainly install update the BIOS especially on dell's site where they require a particular OS to do so.
