Laptop starts up then shuts down

Used Rufus and it booted up from USB right away! Many many many THANKS!
Now I'm browsing through my files without the hassle of it freezing up halfway while the backing up!

As for it shutting down every few minutes or so - I resolved this by using an external notebook fan which the laptop can be placed on. I think it shuts down due to overheating. (Maybe the fan is malfunctioned!) As I found it too hot to touch after it shut down - which is now no longer an issue due to the external fan.

So now I have access to my files, can transfer to external HD without it freezing up or shutting down! Thanks a LOT :D :D :D :D

As for the model number it has a faded out so it is hard to make out most of the letter/numbers. The best I can make out is: SATELLITE L800 - 171 SYSTEM UNIT - I hope this is helpful!

My Computer

Currently I am using the 'Try Ubuntu' option and can view and access my files. If I use the 'Install Ubuntu' option would I still be able to do view and access my files?

My Computer

NO, if you install it will wipe everything

Try is what you want, so now attach your usb drive and copy paste everything over to it.

By you being able to boot to Ubuntu, you have basically proven this to be software, and it may be a good time to reformat and install a fresh copy of windows, after you get all your files.

L800 is your model, but since you booted to the usb, you answered the question I was gonna look for... If it was new enough to boot to a usb.

Patonb - my Windows Key is faded out ! :( Can barely make out anything!

Found the Product ID on System in Control Panel but came out incorrect/incomplete. I assume ID and Key are different? Where and how can I obtain my product key? Did some searching online found something called Magic Jelly Beans that helps you obtain your Product Key, have you heard of it and is it reliable?

My Computer

The chances are that the installed Key (which is the only one programs like ProduKey can find) is the OEM_SLP Key - which is probably of no use here.
Try this...

It will at least give us some data to work with that means a little more than a PID/PK that may or may not be useful...
Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions - Windows 7 Help Forums

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hello. Thank you for your helpful replies.
1. System Repair option worked for a moment there after booting up without Ubuntu -I can now access my account and can boot up safe made but in normal freezes up key. Also disabled all programs which start up once logging in which helped a lot.
2. Used magic Jelly beans to obtain product key; You are right it says - 'Installed from OEM Media' - However there are two: one a Product ID and one as CD Key. Is the latter the correct one?
3. Any sticker on my laptop is completely illegible. However the ones on the laptop compartment are intact - please see images. Also info obtained from Control Panel:

5. Tried to download the Vista ISO to create a reinstall CD provided that the Product Key is correct - When double clicked the MicrosoftInstaller.exe got the error message:
''Windows Vista Setup Preparation cannot find one of its required files. Please ensure the SetupPrep.exe, boot.wim and install.wim were downloaded to the same folder. Return to your digital locker for support. View Purchase History and click on the support link for Windows Vista. See Windows Marketplace for more information.''

However reattempting to install again - Will report back on how it went. (install.wim is taking awfully long to download - is this normal?)

The 426 error in the report implies that something is blocking the SLSVC from loading.

Your problem appears to be that the Software Licensing Service is not running. and it must, if Vista is not to complain.
Have you been using any form of Registry Cleaner??

First check that the Service is set to start Automatically –

Click on Start,
in the Search box, type

SERVICES.MSC

and hit the Enter key.
Accept the UAC prompt, then look in the listing for the Software Licensing Service – right-click on it and select Properties.
Make sure that it’s set to Automatic, and click Apply

Once that’s properly set, Start the service – how long before it appears to stop again? Is there anything in the Event Viewer to indicate why it stopped? – is there an error message?

Please run the following commands in an Elevated (Admin) Command Prompt Window, and post the results.

net start slsvc
sc qc slsvc
sc queryex slsvc
sc qprivs slsvc
sc qsidtype slsvc
sc sdshow slsvc

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Hello NoelDP :D

Thank you very much for your instructions! :D :D :D This laptop is very old, it has been almost three years since I last used it. I do however vaguely remember attempting to fix my laptop with some Registry Cleaner! (poor attempt!)

1. Ran Services.msc found the status as Started and already set to Automatic.
2. These are the results of the CMD:

Product Key is the one you want btw.
Did you burn the disks, then try booting to them and installing that way?

Patonb - thank you for your reply. I have not burned it to cd yet as it has not finished downloading yet.
Additionally, is CD Key the Product Key?

PS isn't the instructions on this link http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/301852-vista-iso-download-create-installation-dvd-usb.html for burning it to CD? Meaning I download it first then burn it - or does it start installing directly from within - as this is a different laptop I am using while trying to repair the other one.

The Product Key in the MGADiag report CANNOT be used to activate anything (except when installed by using the manufacturer's Recovery media, on which it is embedded).

The only Product Key you can use with downloaded media is the one from the COA sticker - a 25-character set (5 groups of 5), which does not appear on the pictures you posted.

Both :)

Computers that come pre-installed with Windows from large manufacturers usually come with two Product Keys.

OEM SLP: This is the key that came in Windows (from the factory). It works by connecting to a BIOS flag (the SLIC table) found only on computers from that Manufacturer. It also checks for the existence of proper matching licenses in the OS itself. Once it sees both, it self-activates every time the machine is rebooted.

COA SLP: This is the key seen on the sticker located on the side, bottom or in the battery compartment of your machine. This key is for use if the OEM SLP self-activation stops working for whatever reason.

Hello All! :D :D :D :D
Managed to create a Vista Reinstall ISO on my USB and reinstalled my windows fresh. Everything works fine software-wise. Used the CD Key (which turned out to be the Product Key) which I obtained using Magic Jelly Beans. Regarding the laptop heating up and turning off - I am temporarily using an external laptop fan to prevent this. Do I need to replace the battery or is the laptop's internal fan the issue?

Many thanks :D :D :D :D
