Major Problem, URGENT HELP PLEASE, guys

Hmm you caught, no I am indeed, that's why I try to fix it with you guys instead of bringing it straight to the shop like mom suggested... Do those error messages help? Because I've read also that some of those BSOD's come through driver incompatibility...
Mobo is Foxconn 6150K8MA-EKRS
Last time I checked it was 6.00 at the BIOS...
Yes I see wha you mean with that MSCONFIG: tick a couple more boxes every time and when it sticks, retick them till I know where the prob is right? Yes I'll try that tomorrow, it's wednesday: lot of time:)

Seriously, if you take it to the shop, then likely they gonna do a reformat and reload anyway - AFTER they've tried everything you already have.

I think we've hit a road block. If you're feeling up to it, go to Foxconn's website and see if there is a new BIOS available for you - but make sure that you get one FOR YOUR MOTHERBOARD otherwise you could end up turning your PC into a rather expensive paperweight. I've been doing this stuff for nearly 20 years now, and I still take a deep breath and say a prayer everytime I update a BIOS.

If a BIOS update doesn't work for you, then the only option would be either for you to buy me an airplane ticket so I can see for myself, or to format and reload (which I HATE recommending anyway).

Post a copy of each event viewer entry that has an error message. Not the informational. Just the problems. System restore can cause problems. Can you activate the administrator account and log in with it? Disable UAC.

They are probably duplicates. Post the first three in time order. I rather not have to open a Word document in case your computer is infected.

I am not a big fan of MSConfig. I have seen it cause problems. Be careful not to disable too much that could cause your computer not to boot.

Hi Amplid

To stay safe when using MSCONFIG, follow these basic rules:
  1. BOOT - Don't change anything here. Generally, all options must be off.
  2. SERVICES - Make sure you use the "Hide all Microsoft Services" option before you turns anything off
  3. STARTRUP - You can for the most part concentrate on this section, turning all off, and then rebooting after re-enabling each item one at a time, like I said earlier.
  4. GENERAL - To undo all changes you made with MSCONFIG, go to the General section and select "Normal" startup

Hey guys,

SCSIraidguru, I'll post them as soon as I can!

Dzomlija, I've been doing the MSConfig for a while now. Before I started that, when Ibooted my pc when I came home, it didn't give me a BSOD for a long time, but then after about 30 minutes it gave me: DRIVER_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error.

After that, I disabled unimportant startup options, I went to general and chose diagnostic, so all important drivers would stay enabled and I just started from the top in startup, enabling.

I got one more BSOD doing that saying: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and the Nvidia Ntune Command has stopped working. Don't know what it is... but it didn't cause a BSOD, so allright so far.

I'll keep you informed.

Please read completely and print this.

I am a senior network engineer and IT Manager. I run a corporate network and have certs from Microsoft, Novell and Cisco. I troubleshoot issues all the time. You should see the ones from my God Box.

Before we get into using MSConfig. I rather solve it a different way. Dzomlija and I have been PMing about a strategy to solving your problem.

First, disable UAC, remove your anti-virus and disable your firewall. Dzomlija can post how to disable UAC. I am not in front of Vista right now. I want to remove security and anti-virus from the problem. You can reinstall them later.

In your event viewer, right click on each category and empty without saving them. I want to clear your event viewer and then reboot. Once it comes up, it will only be from a restart. Less errors to look at.

Shut down.

Unplug all USB devices you don't need. Remove sound cards, modem, any adapters or controllers you don't need. We want to get barebones. Leave your internet on. If you have on-board sound, disable it. What we want to do is remove any other hardware that could cause issues. You just want installed what you need to boot Vista. Strip it down to minimal hardware levels. If you have 4 sticks of RAM, go down to 1 or 2, depending if you need RAM in pairs to boot or not.

Once you restart, go back into your event viewer and start with the earliest error. We need to see the error code, file causing the event, and the message for it. Usually, clearing the earlier event errors will get rid of other errors further in the boot cycle. Once you right click on each category and clear it.

Once we clear all the problems and you can reboot cleanly. Reinstall anti-virus and enable the firewall. Leave UAC off.

You will reinstall your hardware one component at a time in this order

RAM
firewire / USB controllers
sound adapters

We want to see if any of it is causing a problem. Shutdown. Add one new component. Restart. Check for errors in event viewer.

You can turn off UAC by following this procedure:
  1. Open "Control Panel"
  2. Click "User Accounts and Family Safety"
  3. Click "User Accounts"
  4. Click "Turn User Account Control on or off"
  5. Uncheck "Use User Account Control (UAC)..." (Add a check to turn it back on)
  6. Click OK
Just when you're done, and the problem is solved, be sure to turn UAC back on

Yes I already figured that out, thanks.
Now I've turned off UAC, uninstalled avast and disabled my firewall (feeling vulnerable...:p but pulled out networking cable, till point where the print says I should leave it in). I'm working in the Evetviewer now, but I can't delete the items. All I get are things like copy, filter, export... But no deleting... How do I delete items from eventviewer?
I have to take my soundcard off my mobo as well right, not just USB devices.
Sorry I got it now, but do I have do delete everything? For example in logs under security, all of them have a key in front of them... I don't want to do anything wrong.
Thanks for the effort so far!!!

Hi Amplid,

The screnshot below shows how to clear the logs:

Event_Viewer_Clear_Logs.jpg

Just right-click on the particular category you want to clear, then click "Clear Log..."

And don't worry about doing anything wrong. You'll only be deleting a history of the events that Windows has recorded. Sort of like deleting the History of Internet Explorer. The point being we want to to empy the entire log, so that after a reboot you can quickly find the ones that are of interst to you.

I am not going to have you do anything destructive. No anti-virus are a few hours should not harm you. You can install it later today. Avast should not be the problem but its one less thing that could cause an issue. I use Avast Pro 4.8 and it works great with little overhead.

Clearing the event viewer will only get rid of the history of errors and events. Since you are rebooting, the new event viewer will only have current events so you don't have as much to look at. Just less overwealming for you.

second problem first.

7026 error on i8042prt.

You can remove the registry key to solve it. This is very risky.

- Device: i8042prt - In my case deleting the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt] solved this issue.

Instead you can do this without editting the registry.

I would get a PS/2 mouse and keyboard and remove the USB keyboard and see if the issue goes away. I picked one up for $4 (keyboard) and $10 (mouse). Find the i8042prt files in C:\windows directories and delete them. Once this is done. Shut down and plug the USB keyboard and mouse in and retry.

Get a Logitech USB mouse and keyboard instead. They work great in Vista. I use a G11 and G15 keyboard and a G7 wireless mouse.

What else is listed for the 7023 error?

Did you install Vista SP1 from the original CD or upgrade to SP1 after Vista was installed? Seems strange the Windows Update has that error.

Ok, this is what I've found about "i8042prt":

The i8042prt subkey stores data for the i8042prt driver. The i8042prt driver controls the keyboard and PS/2-compatible mouse for the Intel 8042 controller.

The above comes from Microsoft Technet, and is related to Windows 2000, so may not be applicable to you, but it's a start.

Question: Are you using a USB keyboard? And if yes, have you enabled "Legacy Devices" for you USB controllers in the BIOS? It's a long shot, but that all I have right now.

As for "Windows Update" is not a legit Win32 application, try the following:
  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt (Click Start, type "CMD" without quotes, then press <CTRL>+<SHIFT>+<ENTER>)
  2. In the Command Prompt, type "SFC /SCANNOW" (without quotes) and press <ENTER>
  3. If the System File Checker picks up any errors, it will prompt to repair them.
