Hi Amplid,

What is the EXACT wording about the application error and the registry warning? Please use the EXACT spelling of the messages as given on screen. A genuine error message is correctly spelt, but many error messages generated by malware often have spelling errors. Checking Google yields that 'NMSAccessU' is associated with 'CDBurnerXP', a disk recording software package (as well as others). 'GEAR' is a driver which is used by many disk recording software vendors. You need an updated driver (link given below). This should resolve this issue. The registry issues can be caused by incompatible drivers.

Hi Amplid,

The error about the display driver you mentioned in your last post can have a number of causes. One of these is on systems that have on-board graphics as well as a graphics card slot. Although the BIOS is supposed to detect when an external graphics card is used and automatically disable the on-board graphics, this doesn't always work and the relevant setting in the BIOS needs setting manually.
However, given the number of errors that you have had, and are continuing to have, the best advice that I can currently give you is that you reinstall Vista. At the appropriate point in the set up procedure, format your hard disk(s). Use the FULL format option as opposed to the quick option. Some errors can be caused by faulty sectors on your hard disk and a full format allows the onboard hard drive electronics to mark these sectors so that they are taken out of use. When you have reinstalled Vista, don't reactivate it straight away. Instead, make use of the grace period to ensure your system is working correctly.

Backup your data only. Do a clean reinstall with no partitions. Make sure you remove all active partitions and shutdown. Leave it off for 5 minutes. When you restart you do a new install of the base OS. Then, install SP1. Then, all the security patches, then, anti-virus.

just buy a new hard drive and start again also check your wiring to every thing in side case

Not a very good thing to suggest, especially as 1) not every one can afford a new HD, and 2) if you don't know what happened to cause the problem the first time how can you prevent it from happening again?

I would still recommend a clean reinstall. You will be up and running faster and start with a fresh registry.

I'm reinstalling Vista at the moment SCSIraidGURU, but I guess that'll take a while...
I deleted the partitions (3 on a 200 GB hard disk ...) and formatted the disk.

Hi Amplid,

With modern operating systems, such as Vista and its predecessor XP, there is no longer any need to partition a large hard drive. Partitioning was used in older operating systems (such as Win 98SE) in order to cut down the wasted space. These older systems used FAT32 as the disk filing system, but because of the way the system worked it meant that the size of the clusters on the disk (a cluster is a group of several sectors and is the smallest allocatable unit) grew larger according to the size of the disk. In large hard drives, this meant a lot of wasted space that couldn't be accessed. By reducing the size of the disk, or partitioning it, the size of the clusters was kept down to a more acceptable level and the wasted space was kept to a minimum. One of the advantages of the NTFS filing system as used by XP and Vista is that it allows for very large disk sizes whilst still using a cluster size of 4KB. The FAT32 system, on the other hand, starts out at 4KB per cluster but can be as much as 64KB per cluster on the larger drives. For example, consider a 3KB file. With the FAT32 system, the amount of wasted space per cluster can range from 1KB (25%) to 61KB (95.3125%). On an NTFS formatted drive, the cluster sizes are a constant 4KB so you can see the considerable amount of disk space saved - 60KB in the above example. Over a whole hard drive, this wasted space can add up to quite a considerable amount - in some cases as much as 2/3 to 3/4 of its actual capacity.
Having explained the reasoning behind disk partitioning I shall answer your question about speed. Partitioning a disk, for example to create a partition solely for the paging file, can actually SLOW your system down. This is because each partition has its own allocation map that tells the drive electronics which clusters are in use, and every time the partition is accessed, this map must be read. This means extra read/write head movement, all of which takes time. A single partition system doesn't have the overhead associated with this, so it runs faster. If you do want a separate partition for your data or paging file, I recommend that you use a physically separate hard drive. This method can actually SPEED up your system, particularly if you used a dedicated drive for your paging file because your main drive is no longer having to cope with the constant movement of the read/write head to and from the section containing your paging file.

In addition, I actually recommend that you reinstall Vista annually. This ensures that not only is the detritus and "cr*p" that accumulates on your system is removed, but if you perform a FULL format as opposed to a QUICK format at the appropriate stage it means that the hard drive is getting a thorough workout and that any flakey sectors are being caught before they can cause problems. A good time to do this is when you renew your Internet Security software. It is surprising what a difference this makes to the performance of your machine - even if you don't install anything else other than the Windows and Internet Security updates and just use it for browsing the Internet.

RAID 1: OS
RAID 5 or 10: apps and data
RAID 5 or 10: target for A/V apps
RAID 0: Paging, and temp files.

My workstation can process data faster in this format. I have room for 16 hard drives currently. I can add another 8 drive enclosure in the future.

One other question: should I let windows update download the drivers, or should I go to the nvidia website and download them myself?

Microst update is good for its own products but when it comes to drivers of any add on card go to the manufacturers website.

Use the manufacturer's drivers over Microsoft's version. You will get better performance.
