Can't I just update to SP1 via windows update after reinstalling windows?

Some people have had problems getting SP1 from WU.
It would best to get it from here; you can download/install it directly from this link.
Though it would be best to dl/save it to a DVD so you have it ready when you need it.

No SCSIraidGURU, last time I ran it, pc BSOD'd again so Ididn't.
I've loaded all pics and school work and word and excel to disk together with sp1 so i'm ready to reinstall vista tomorrow. Or have I forgotten something?
Wesley, I have had performance turned on a long time and SP1 installed too.
I've had vista for 7 months now, running fine, just recently the BSOD's so..

Man this sucks. I have been following this thread since it started, but I didnt know how to help so I stayed quiet. I was really rooting for you amplid. I like when people are able to solve problems that have been giving them a hard time for a while. Remember that Re-formating and re-installing your computer and operating system is the completely last resort, but now that you have tryed your hardest, I think its almost about time. The bright side is that this was a very togh problem to diagnose and in the future you will be able to fix smaller problems using the same methods you learned throughout this ordeal.

He had too many issues and possible Trojan Horses. It is easier to reinstall from scratch and start over.

The SATA driver is out of date, and for the BIOS they're giving an update as well... But I already knew about the SATA. When I tried to install driver, pc gs BSOD...

I'm finding a lot of BIOS download files www.foxconnchannel.com, but I'm not downloading anything, as you said BIOS is very tricky...

I was just watching some youtube vids when I got another BSOD. I rebooted and then I got ANOTHER one straight away with a new error I'd not seen before..

Make sure you backup your data. Wipe the partitions completely. Once you reinstall Vista. Put on SP1 and your anti-virus. Then do a full virus scan.

I backed up my music and some school word docs. Deleting the partitions happens when I reformat the disk while reinstalling vista right? Do partitions give advantages in some way? Because I think it's easier without partitions, I have two now C: and D:...

I usually do one parition per hard drive or RAID array. Less disk thrashing. I run my OS on RAID 1 and other RAID arrays for applications and data. I do setup a RAID 0 array for the paging file, temp files, and target for my A/V and CAD apps. The applications run faster if they read from one array and write to another.

Yeah ok so I'm going to leave those partitions for what they are for now, having only one hard disk. I'm going to have to do it soon: pc BSOD'd again with the IRQL, then I rebooted it and got new error: BAD_POOL_HEADER. Won't reboot in normal anymore now. Any last hints? (does it take long? It's 5pm here)

I would remove all the partitions and start clean. When Vista CD gets to that point of choosing the partition. Delete all partitions and shutdown. Restart and install clean. Backup to an external hard drive or DVD.

So I have to start installing vista, then in partitions delete the partitions and restart the installation. Yes I backed everything up along with SP1 to a 4.7Gig DVD.
Can I still do it now or will it take too long, the installation (5.17PM here)

As SCSIraidGURU said, it's better to have 1 partition per disk. It extends the overall lifespan of a drive because it doesn't have to work as hard moving between partitions.

If you really want to have your installs on C: and everything else on D:, then it's better to rather get a completely seperate drive just for the D:. That way it's also easier to reload the OS with too much risk of overwriting important data (if you've taken the trouble to move all your user data folders there anyway). All my stuff is spread across 8 hard disks atm...
