New Sound Card Sound still choppy

OK,

Sorry to hear it's still a problem.

What priority is being given to each of the processes in task manager?

It could just be that the priority of playing an mp3 is below the other two & that it is being "Over powered" by the other tasks?

What are your thoughts/ findings?

Priority?? Ok I have to admit you have me on that one.

I have screen dumps of my task manager if that is what you are talking about.

task manager is from the top, task manager 1 is second

I use winamp lite to play my MP3's, however when I first got the card, I tried "there" player, it still made no difference, my MP3's were "choppy" under the same set of circumstances.

The thing is, I do not know how long this has been happening for, it could have been since Vista was installed, as usually when I defrag I have no applications open, and my AV Scan and system backups are done automatically and usually when I am in bed.

I have no idea as to why my music is playing poorly, it was never an issue when I had Win2k Pro

Hi,

Looking at the task manager pictures all seems ok. Which is frustrating.

Please do the same but with the back-up etc running. Also look here & see if this applies to your system:-

Although my CPU isn't being over taxed, the sound starts to get choppy at 35%, the CPU maxes at 50%, but goes no higher. And sound is choppy.

I also have Paragon Hard Disk Manager (My other backup programme), sound is choppy when using that also.

Although I no longer use Vista's backup, I tried that too and same result, choppy sound

Does your CPu ever go above 50%?

Check your power settings for CPu performance limits.

Oh hell yes, if I am ripping a movie, doing an anti virus scan, backing up, playing Warcraft 3, have IRC running in the background, and surfing the web it can get up to 100%. And don't laugh, yes I can do all those things at once I am a woman and I can multitask .

Although I will admit when I built this quad core rig, it was more for Vista than my multitasking, prior to installing Vista I had a dual core with Win2k on it, and it handled everything superbly.

Is your system overclocked at all?

Also, if you go into msconfig>services tab>tick hide all microsoft services. Can you give us a screenshot of everything on the list, it'll show us what 3rd party software is running.

Nope not into overclocking, as you will see I also have all the unecessary services turned off.

Well I am not exactly sure whether the fix is permanent, or what exactly fixed it ..... I changed my Virtual Memory to 4985mb (min) and 9970mb (max). I then toddled off to Nvidia to see if they had any new GPU updates, and there was one released 25 October 2010. (I try to keep all of my drivers up to date). So I thought why the heck not, downloaded it, installed it, rebooted.

I did note that in this GPU update it stated :-
Installs HD Audio driver to version 1.1.9.0.

Am currently defragging my external hard drives, and doing yet another backup, and other than a couple of little hiccups my MP3's are playing beautifully!!! :D

So who knows?? All I can do is hope the smooth playing continues

Lottie if possible, can you please leave this thread open, just in case the problem reappears? And thank you ever so much for all of your help :D

The page file I have always set as custom, it was only during the OS crash it got reset, as for updating my GPU, as I said I like to keep everything up to date, so I tend to head off to Nvidia on a semi regular basis to check for updates.

As I said, the sound is not perfect at the moment, wee little hiccups now and then, but not total distortion like I was experiencing before.

Sorry to hear your problem is back.

Have you looked at the items you claim soilved it last time & compared them to see if they need adjusting again, i.e. page file.

If so, I would suggest you first look into the acronis software to see if that is hogging resources. Try un-installing it as a test.

I would try performing a clean boot to see if any services or startup items are causing this behaviour.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 ;Note, for step d, i would note down what services are enabled before disabling them.

If that fails, type "cmd" into the start search box, right click and choose "Run as Administrator". Then type "sfc /scannow" into the command promt window. This will let windows check for any problems with system files.

Ok am trying this ... have set windows to manage my pagefile. Gone into Sound, Properties, Advanced, and unticked/unchecked "Give exclusive mode applications priority"

Well that didn't work at all two BSOD later.

I emailed Creative asking if there Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal, with the x-ram would fix the problem a month ago, *sigh* no response. Do they not want business?

There was "Stuff" found & removed it.
