Recurrent BSOD - Newbie Could Sure Use Some Help !

Ok ! Right now malwarebytes is running a quick scan...and at the bottom of the little viewing box it has a place where I can purchase it, but I noticed that my desk top has an icon on it now, so I think I am all good with the free download.

When do you think I should update the old drivers ? Also, I would love to hear how I can maintain my computer and avoid problems ! :)

TIA again !

Susie,
I and the other members will be here as long as you need us.
Allow me to suggest, use the computer for a while make sure that you get no more BSODs. Then when you know that you are good, we will give you all the information that you want.
BTW, for both Security Essentials and Malwarebytes, once a week make a full scan, not quick scan and you must update Malwarebytes manually to keep it up to date. That is something that you must do with the free version. It is the opinion of most here that the free is just as good as the paid as far as security.

Oh man...one of those fake looking little screens just popped up on a web page I have open that says "You have (7) Windows errors - make your pc run faster" and it is blinking blue. I don't trust those guys. And the result of the quick scan shows that I have one object with the name beginning with PUM.Hijack.Sta...", category is registry data, item is HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Curr..., and Other is Bad (0) Good (1). I am not going to do a thing until you tell me what I should do !!! :)

First of all when you get those windows it is spam and maybe worse. Do not click on anything., Hit alt cntrl and delete Bring up task manager. In task manager go to process on top. Put cursor on the problem window and then delete. If you click on the window you may be downloading a virus or worse.
Now for the problems that you found Malwarebyes will delete it for you.
Since we now know that you have problems, update malwarebytes and then run a full, not a quick scan.
You are doing fine. You learn quickly and want to take care of your computer. We will have your computer A-1 soon.

Uh oh...I got the Windows Task Manager up and clicked on Processes. It gave me a list of...processes, I guess ! :) But now I am not sure whether I am to put my cursor on the buggy window, the bigger window which had the web pate I was looking at when the buggy window came up, or one of the choices in the list. So much for me being a fast learner, huh ? :)

Dang ! A little extra info - I clicked on Remove in malwarebytes to get rid of that object and a report came up in my Notepad - looks like a summation of what the quick scan did and found...then my Spybot popped up with "...an important registry entry that has been changed...Winlogon, value changed, entry=userinit, old data=userinit.exe, new value = userinit.exe,

Spybot is asking whether I want to allow this change...seems like it might be connected to the thing the quick scan found. Sigh...I am weakening... :)

If you removed the virus, that change is probably due to that. But guess what. Even if you start having bad problems, dont worry, just smile. We made a restore point we can put everything together again.

Well I still am looking at that task manager window not sure what to do, and that buggy blue flashing window is still there too...there are some exe files in task manager window and all but three of the entirety of the processes have the user name Owner. The three that do not are called csrss.exe, winlogon.exe and Ati2evxx.exe. Amongst the ones I do not recognize are splwow64.exe, unsecapp.exe, msseces.exe, ehmsas.exe and a couple more as well. I just was scared to go forward and not sure how to do it, so the "punk out" option came to mind ! :)

You are so NOT fired !!! I just was confused with all those processes...and now you may want to fire me ! I closed the main window I was looking at when the buggy window popped up and the buggy window is now gone ! The only applications I can see int he task mgr window is this website, SOS Online Backup and Spybot...that seems kosher, yes ?

Usually closing the main Window does not work, but it did so no so great.
Now boot the computer and use it for a few days. If there are no BSODs, come back to this thread, mention my name and I will tell you many other important things.
If you get more BSODs, just post the report, the more the better. Each just gives a small clue.

Those are all legit Applications.

Thank you Rich - will do ! Just one last question:

Spybot popped up with "...an important registry entry that has been changed...Winlogon, value changed, entry=userinit, old data=userinit.exe, new value = userinit.exe,

Spybot is asking whether I want to allow this change...do you think I should allow or deny it ? This Spybot message came up after the quick scan and removal of the one object that malwarebytes found.

Special software is needed to read the reports. I am not going to be home until the first week in May. If you did not receive help by then, post again and I will be there for you.

Hello Susie!

Unfortunately, the last zip you have attached contained the actual .exe, and not the results of the .exe.

Would you mind having another try at running the tool, and uploading the results for me? http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-debugging/282419-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

Thanks a lot, and the very best of luck :)

Richard (yep, it actually is, just to make this thread that little bit more confusing!)
