Recycle bin corrupted big time

created a new user account and got a nice new desktop. EMPTY normal looking bin etc etc... so whats that telling us?? i should switch to a new user account?? then ill lose ALL my stuff.

My Computer

That's great news. You can now copy the contents of you're old accounts C:\Users\(user name) folders into the corresponding new account's C:\Users\(user name) folders to have most if not all of your old account's stuff in the new one now.

After everthing checks out and copied over ok, you can delete the old account from within the new one.

any chance you could assist me with this? more detailed.. do i go to computers in start and type my username etc?? and just copy and paste to new account folder which is the same thing but new?

since i am admin... will i be able to delete the MAIN pw protected account which is what im on now? i only have 1 user accnt on this comp and its me...

My Computer

Sure thing Nancy. :)

Yes, it will pretty much be the same but new.

From inside the C:\Users\(user-name) folder of your old account, you would copy all of the contents in only each indiviual subfolder (not the folder itself) one by one, then paste these folder contents into the corresponding subfolders in your new accounts C:\Users\(user-name) folder.

This will copy over all of your old accounts user settings, shortcuts, and files into the new account.

After you have copied everything over to the new account, log on to the new account and make sure everything that you wanted is there and all works ok. If it does, then yes you can delete the old user account (this link has more details on this to help) from only within the new one.

I am in C:\user\nancy, now.... and i have 44 items in there from APP data and application data folders, contacts, cookies, desktop, downloads, documents, favorites, links
incomplete, NTDATUSER stuff.... what do i need to copy thats important to move to another account? there is a start menu folder, shared folders, what is supposed to be moved besides my personal stuff?
also some of the folders appear LIGHTER in color then others, transparent like.

and just copying and pasting them to new account will work?

My Computer

by the way, do i have to make the new account 1st? right now on my desktop i go to start then computer etc etc... will i have to log off then on again to NEW user account then go to start computer to paste folder contents in? and so id have to keep switching back and forth to user accounts, old and new ?? or just start and computer and then to my new and old folders there ...in C:\user\ whatever...

My Computer

Yep, you will need to copy all of them. Open each folder one by one, then select all and copy, then paste to the same folder in thenew account. Repeat for each folder. ;)

You would do all of this from within the new account.

ok i made the new account and am just switching back and forth instead of logging off...

im still not sure i want to move ALL 44 folders..i wish there was a way i could show you the folders other then favorites desktop etc etc.. i dont want to drag the problem files to new account. videos appears to be last on the list in the new account folder.
i have text docs, go to assist phone applications, ntuser dat file, log1, log2 files, regtrans MS files BLF file(NTuser.dat) config settings , dated from other day, having to do with this recycle bin issue, registration entries having to do with recycle bin...

all that stuff, do i need to move it all too. i dont want to drag bad stuff from other account to new.

just to add, i can be logged on to new account and do all the copying and pasting from there? just have to click on each account name, correct? what if file is transparent looking? apparently i can only copy things within a folder if there is something IN the folder, if its empty then nothing to copy...

My Computer

Nancy,

You would only want to copy the user subfolders (ex: Music) and the AppData folder contents. For example, open Appdata, select all, copy, then paste in the new account's AppData folder.

Repeat this for the Music, Documents, etc.... folders. :)

You do all of this only while logged on to the new account. You do not log off and do anything from the old account.

sorry for being a bother, i just want to do it right way....right now i have this...C:\users\nancy361(this is new name of new account)
i right click on MUSIC in the list and click open, inside the music folder says DESKTOP, config setting 1kb, under that says sample music(name) and type is shortcut 1 kb
this is inside the music folder... is that what is supposed to be in there?? i havent copied or pasted anything yet...

so now i have to go to OLD account-nancy- click and open music select all then copy then go over to this OPENED music file and paste contents in it??

My Computer

by the way, when i click and open Appdata there are 3 more folders, local, local low, roaming.... how do i take contents from old app data and move to new with 3 differnt sub folders?? there is a big list of stuff in each subfolder. local folder has 27 items local low has 6 items....

and im wondering why in the localLow folder does it have desktop listed in the list with that config setting PICTURE next to the word? i click and open it and all it is is an empty small box that says, desktop-notepad... ever since yesterday when i did that method 2 thru explorer i have that, 2 icons on my desktop and the picture of the config settings then when i open it , it is a box of notepad...

You do not need to copy those one by one. Just select all in the AppData folder and copy that way instead, then repeat for the other user folders (ex: Music). ;)

The desktop.ini files are protected operating system files that store file information. I would recommend that you do step 5 in OPTION TWO of the tutorial below to hide these type of files to prevent accidentally modifying or deleting them and causing problems in your Vista.

ok i did that, its fine...
You will never guess whats happening now........in the new account , recycle bin is NOT emptying!!!

i did what you said. i clicked on music folder in OLD account opened it i see the list of ALL my songs, i do select all, then copy, then move to new account, open music folder and click paste... nothing happens...i dont see my songs at all. just the empty folder of sample music thats normally there.... i deleted that sample music folder and went to empty the bin and nothing happened, just like in my other account....

something else has to be going on with this system.... not just the bin, but why didnt it paste??

My Computer

Nancy,

I would recommend to backup anything that you do not want to lose (ex: Music files, etc...), then do a clean reinstall of Vista. This way you know all corruption is gone. :(
