Getting a Microsoft Windows pop-up window that I cannot fix. It says"

CLOSE PROGRAMS TO PREVENT INFORMATION LOSS
Your computer is low on memory. Save your files and close these programs.

Macrovision Software Manager Agent

Windows will only close enough programes to restore needed memory.

It doesn't matter whether I click on Close Program or Cancel, nothing happens except the pop-up goes away. Typically appears 2-3 more times per hour. No corelation to How Many or Which programs I have open or what I am doing. I am using an "always on" Internet connection and it does not matter whether I have a browser window(s) open

HP diagnosed as a RAM problem, they replaced the motherboard and re-installed the memory sticks. Problem started again a day after receiving it back. Called today and they want me to return the laptop to them AGAIN.

This is an HP Pavillion dv6700 Notebook, Vista Home Premuim 32bit, 3.0 GB RAM, Intel Duo2 Core 2.0 GHz processor.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hello TXbull, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It could be a defective laptop, but you might also check the Page File to see if it is set to be System Managed.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks, I will take a look at the Page File when the laptop is returned to me. I have not changed, so it should be using the default setting.

I used the Memory Diagnostic Tool in BIOS. Said I had no problems, but I noticed it was very slow to perform the check. So HP diagnosed that as a 'mem problem". Switched the mem sticks around, checked them individually, etc...I'll see what HP does this time. In looking inside I do not see where the motherboard was changed out the 1st time I sent it back, I always place a mark on certain items before I send back to the maker. I'll see what they do this time and if the problem persists.

Sent the notebook back to HP over the holidays and got it back last Friday. Paper says they DUPLICATED the problem and changed the motherboard. Plugged it in, booted it up, and voila 5 minutes later got the very same pop-up window. Escalated the issue to an HP case mgr, he sent me 2 new 2GB mem sticks to replace mine, result was slightly better. We had a nice arguement for 30 mins about just replacing the notebook after having sent it in twice for the same prob.

Anyway I finally found a thead about a security flaw with Macrovision Software Manager that was posted Nov 2008, wasn't the exact same problem I was having but some of the conditions were the same. the common thread was Roxio, which I had self installed. So I installed the security update and that seems to have fixed it. If anybody else is getting a warning pop-up window with this program the problem lies in the agent.exe file. This also goes under the name Installshield Update Service, Acresso(formerly Macrovision), or agent.exe.

The info and link to the patch is

FlexNet Connect vulnerability and its effect on Roxio customers=
