Sound skips snaps crackle and pop

There are driver updates for the 8800 and some folks using the beta drivers for the 8800 have had success. We ARE talking about the video card when we type 8800 are we not lol?

Sadly not -

Thus if I need to Skype someone I have to roll back the drivers (which takes me to 1 monitor) but cures it without a reboot.

The after the call reinstall the latest drivers.

Hi Rosthorn,

The devices may be using the same DMA (direct memory access) address and causing a conflict, you can change theese resource settings in device manager for each device. Might also be a good time to check all your BIOS options and disable any shadowing or caching used by the memory or the HPET option used by other components.

This is not a software issue its a hardware problem so the sooner you can find the hardware setting causing the problem the sooner it will be fixed.

Thanks for the tip - sounds a likely cause

I diabled the HPET - that did not do it.

My device manager is flagging nothing. Which devices are best to start with.

All is well on with the windows VGA drivers, only when the Nvidia drivers are loaded does it happen (it is fine under Linux too)

What is the most likely DMA conflict candidate?

Not sure if this is relevant- sine I upgraded to R193 and then plugged in my Receiver to the back jacks as I always have, I cannot set the volume above 50 percent, I get *lots* of feedback, and same for devices in Windows, such as MCE. Reading this thread reminded me of the System Information page.

Start --> type "System Information" in quick search box - select System Information

or

Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Performance Information and Tools --> Advanced Tools (on the left) --> View advanced system details in System Information

Expand Hardware Resources --> click on Conflicts / Sharing.

These are my results.

Since I *don't* have creative onboard (AFAICT) but am now all of a sudden getting crappy sounds, I wanted to see if this info helps out any at all.

I recently disabled HPET per another thread because I thought my computer would to go to sleep because of this, but later realized that my WOL was enabled, and since I run a Kiwi Syslog Daemon to listen for Syslog reports from my router (which can be as often as 3 per minute) I now realize that that is what was causing my problems....

Hey again,

HPET or High Precision E... Timer usually causes probelms with graphics on Vista because it changes the internal CPU/GPU Timing in such a way that it causes lots of problems...Try re-installing the NVidia drivers now its disabled it might work...(HPET messes up Vista badly for myself and a few others)

Check the BIOS for any other advanced graphics or PCIE settings...Something like a Turbo setting or overclock setting will cause the malfunctions with a few other non-standard BIOS settings changing the devices/frequences.

Its definatly a hardware issue with Vista so either your BIOS or device settings...

One thing the looks possible is that the Nvidia 8800GT insists on sharing IRQ with the PCI Promise raid controler. I have tried disabeling / reboot / reinstall, but it insists on the same IRQ. How is that chaned (in Vista the boxes are grayed out)

MB is Asus P5N-D

My Computer

So far I have re-installed 8800GT driver after disabeling HPET
Removed the RAID card - windows shorw no shared IRQ

As soon as the Nvidia drivers are back - sound goes to pieces.
I will experiment with other BIOS settings but it is so slow - 10001 reboots
Any "usual suspects" to help save time?

Hey Rosthorn,

Try taking out two mem sticks and running with only 2GB...Install the NVidia drivers and let me know if the sound issue stops, I have an idea.

The 4gb ram is the problem, the sound software it getting loaded into non-addressable memory space.

SO we try removing one or two mem sticks and the problem stops I know other methods of making the 4gb ram and sound work together.

My Computer

OK - I have had the free time.
Based on the advice given I removed one of the 2gb sticks I had in the machine, dropping me from 4 to 2 gb.
I reformatted a hard drive and did a virgin reo-install of Vista Ultimate 64

When machine was up, tested sound with Nvidia onboard sound- all was perfect. Tested sound with soundblaster Live external USB - all was perfect.
Uploaded all updates (59 of them).
Tested sound on both - all was perfect.
Installed Nvidia 8800 drivers - soind went to c**p on both USB and onboard.
With no sound card in I have no IRQ conflicts.
Intalled linux (Fedora 9) - all perfecy in Linux.
If I disable the Nvidia video drivers, then sound comes back.

HELP please - this is driving me mad. Any ideas what is going on

I do not need high end sound, but I do need the voice recognition and voice over IP whist running other (no sound) processor intensive aps. Voice recognition is wirped out by this because it impacts both line (and USB in) and sound.
The quad core processr is showing no hit (sat at 15% trpically).
I dropped onboard RAID and went to a hardware RAIS card incase that was the problem - no luck.

My system is
1 or 2 x 2gb ram (Buffelo Select branded D2U800C
MB is Nvidia P5n-d
Nviia 8800 gt
Vista Ultimate 64
I have tried from 1 disk to my typical 4
Sometimes a Prommise raid card, sometimes not
no other cards

1 IDE DVD burner (or not - tried with and without)

Each time the sound fails when I install the Nvidia 8800 drivers.

My Computer

I tried the Creative external USB Live! and this was worse.

Again rolled back graphics card driver to VGA microsooft version - all is perfect on the sound, bith USB and any sounmd card.

How can I stop this mess?

Hey Rosthorn,

Might be a hardware conflict? open the Startmenu Searchbox and type System Information then go File> Save and upload it here

My Computer

Hi everyone, I installed the latest beta drivers on the creative site, rebooted and had the same result. I was going to swap in my old Audigy 2 ZS card so i started removing all the creative software from programs and features (creative audio console and open AL) didn't touch anything from Device Manager. After rebooting the sound was working no more snap crackle or pop. I know i wont have access to the more advance features for now until Creative gets their act together. But hey i can at least listen to my tunes without my ears bleeding, Epic Win!

Bit this is happening with my onboard sound - even if I do a clean install with no creative products in any slots.

So it is not Creative to blame this time.
