System Restore Is Missing?

Everyone who has helped so far has done their best, but may I suggest that we get an expert in this area. Its up to you.

I'm pretty happy so far. The steps I've taken have gotten rid of that backdoor thing, it's got the volume copy service turned back on, I found the restore points...we're doing well I'd say :-)

May I ask what you mean by "get an expert in this area"? Do you mean to answer my last questions regarding the infection?

Sounds good. I appreciate you guys "recruiting" her :-)

I just started the scan with Avast. It's using the default settings for a "full scan".

Also, FYI I just logged in as admin, in regular (not safe) mode and the system restore function seems to be working - my restore points are there and I could select one if I wished to do so and it looks like I'll be able to create a new one prior to adding any new software.

I'll be popping in and out to check scan progress and to check for new posts here for the next couple hours.

Thanks!

<update> Just to add info to the scenario regarding our security procedures...

  • this machine has windows update set to automatic;
  • it has Avast set to auto update (it's still version 5 since version 6 seems to conflict with Vista SP1 and this machine hasn't gone to SP2 yet);
  • it has Threatfire set to auto update;
  • all downloaded files are scanned prior to running, no matter where they come from;
  • we don't plug in any thumbdrives or cds or dvds that we don't know the origin for;
  • we don't visit "bad" sites - this is essentially a work computer;
  • we don't run any facebook apps;
  • we don't click on anything in emails;
I could probably go on. I'd love to know how long this thing's been on there and whether it did anything or just sat there.

Thanks again.

Please follow the advice of Richc46 and Ilikefree, in relation to possible infections.
Be careful, System Restore Points can also be infected.

So based on how things wrapped up last night I thought things would be good today but not so...

The Avast scan completed last night with nothing found.

Today I checked to see if restore points were still there. They were. Unfortunately Threatfire threw up a message about a RUNDLL32.EXE file (see screen caps attached).

I have no idea whatsoever what to do about it and the so-called explanation found in the Threatexpert report makes no sense to me at all.

I figured, since the restore points are back, I'd try restoring to a time before we seemed to be having problems. I picked 6/17. Went thru the restore process and all seemed fine. Just rebooted and Got the following message:

System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details: An unspecified error occurred during system restore.

You might want to try System Restore again and choose a different restore point.
So, that's not good.

Questions:

  1. What now?
  2. What's the scoop with the RUNDLL32.EXE thing? I don't understand anything I read from Threatfire.
  3. What do we do about the System Restore not working? The Volume Shadow Copy service seems to be starting and running properly.
I didn't see the "security expert" check in. Any way to point her (or someone) here to lend a hand?

Thank you

Hi and thanks for helping. Does it matter whether I run this from an admin or the standard user profile? I'm currently logged into admin because that was the only way I could explore to and upload the RUNDLL.EXE file to Virustotal (which incidentally said it's a "goog" file).

Thanks

Wow, looking at those logs...never knew how much cr*p was on this machine that we never installed. This is a work machine and that's all it's used for.

Is anyone around? I could really use the help before it gets much later if at all possible. The day's passing and I really haven't been able to do anything while waiting for guidance.

Thanks very much.

I now find that I was incorrect earlier when I reported System Restore working properly. Seems it only works in the Admin profile. In the standard user profile, clicking to start the System Restore application returns the same error as reported in the beginning of this thread.

Haven't heard back from anyone since posting logs 3+ hours ago so I'm not sure what to do next or if I should go someplace else for help. I don't like to cross post to multiple forums for the same problem at the same time but I'm coming up on 24 hours of dealing with this.

Please have patience. With time zones, prior commitments and personal life, Jacee will be back as soon as possible. We can assure you that you are not forgotten.

Thanks Rich. I was just checking in case this had turned into a lost cause. I'd hoped to be able to deal with this during the day - kept postponing work all day but we have order processing to do soon and we're not going to be able to do much problem solving on this issue once we get back to work and that machine is going to have to be in use.

At least I feel that SR work should come to a stop until Jacee is done. Malware often if the cause of SR malfunction. The virus writers know that with a good restore point, you can remove the virus. After Jacee is done we will know how to progress with the SR.
