Just to clarify - Best Buy installed the operating systems on this computer. We had to wait about 2 hrs before it was ready to take home. Sorry I did not clarify that.

My Computer

Your post are little confusing when you talk about uploads?

Thankfully eMachine is one of the manufacture's that actually gives you an installation disc.

I would just try and re-install Vista on that computer. DATA will be lost but you can't seem to boot up and have problems with the hard drive anyway.

OK, first you need to put that that disc in your CD/DVD drive.

Set your computer to boot from disc, this is located in your bios and is different for all computers. When PC boots up look on the top right and see if it says boot options like F12.

Once it boots to CD/DVD follow the tutorial below on how to continue with installation.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117366-clean-install-full-version-vista.html

Skips steps 5-7 since it wont ask you to enter product key!

You don't have internet access at home? How will you do updates?

I would have internet connection once the download takes. Here is what I have:

Original hard drive - IBM DESK STAR MODEL DTLA-307045 46.1 MAX GB
REPLACED HDD SATA 320 GB MODEL WD2500JS-22NCB1

DISC GIVEN WITH MACHINE EMACHINES MICROSOFT WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM 32 FOR DIST ONLY WITH A NEW EMACHINES PC COPYRIGHT 2007 MICTOSOFT CORP GATEWAY - there is a bar code sticker on the sleeve ######S02-441-G
ADDITIONAL DISC EMACHINES RECOVERY DRIVERS AND APPS - WRITTEN BY BEST BUY

Also - If I boot to disc from Bios will this disc take and complete the new download? Previous attempts of redownloading the disc have failed (did not set up the bios boot to disc though)

Hope this helps our project......

Your using your words incorrectly. That disc you got from eMachine is a 100% complete installation disc.

What do you mean will the disc take and complete the download?
It doesn't download anything, the disc is used to re-install Microsoft Vista Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1.

Previous attempts of redownloading the disc have failed
I don't know what this means, you don't download the disc from anywhere, you already own the disc, which is the one from eMachine called:
EMACHINES MICROSOFT WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM 32 FOR DIST ONLY WITH A NEW EMACHINES PC
I assume the old 46.1GB is no good, unsure how that was original, can't recall them using this small of a hard drive with Vista machines. Disconnect that hard old hard drive and just connect the SATA hard drive.

Set PC to boot from disc, and follow the tutorial above on how to install. REMEMBER YOU Will LOSE ALL DATA on that drive.

As far as that eMachine recovery driver and apps from BestBuy, you probably won't need that anyone! It's probably full of useless apps.

For drivers, just use the universal drivers from Microsoft that will automatically be installed with a NEW installation of Vista. Once you finally get Vista installed, you should have Internet access. Run Windows updates and it will find any drivers that you system may need.

When I said download I really meant uploading / reinstalling Vista back onto the hard drive. After it crashed the new attempt to upload Vista failed. I will try booting from disc tonight like you said Josh - I really appreciate your help with this. Wish me luck. Take care, Todd.

Ok, by the way, uploading/downloading are the wrong terms. :) Those are terms used when referring to activities one does on the Internet.

The word that describes what your looking to do is called install or installation of Vista. So let us know tonight when you get home, whether not not you were able to INSTALL Vista on that eMachine. :D:D

No problem. I hope this works out for you. If you never install Vista before printout that tutorial, or watch a youtube clip that someone probably made and that shows you how to install.

But you booted from the DVD right? It failed several attempts already.

Explain what you mean when you installed three times. You put the disc in the drive, turn on the computer and did what????????

It doesn't install itself. LOL

Yes - I put the disc in - start the install - It goes through the process - in english, then asks for a specific install - then it installs - 5 items if I remember / one of them goes to 100% / after each is installed then a check mark comes up. When all are installed it says it will restart. Then it tries to restart / then the crash dump appeared.

How many sticks of RAM do you have.

Ok here is what happened last night:

1st try - F10 boot from CD
screen appeared - windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause - to fix:
1.insert windows disc and restart
2.choose language a
3.click repair

file\windows\system32\winload.exe status OxC0000221

Info - file is poss corrupt. Its header checksum does not match the computed checksum

Tried again

Boot from disc - showed windows loading files
selected custom advance
disc partition 298.1 - free 263.9 (problem here???)
expanded files to 30% (another attempt got me to 80%) then this came up:

windows can't install req files. make sure all files req for installation are available and restart - install error code 0x800706F8

Retried to install - error code 0xC000005

Then a blue screen

Problem detected
windows shut down
tech info:

STOP 0x0000001A
(0x00003452, 0x73EDB000, 0xC080303C, 0x31DAE064)

So? Have any ideas?

Wow! I'm sorry your having some much difficultly installing Vista, it really can't be this difficult to install, especially with eMachine.

Now you only had one hard drive inside the computer at the time of installation and this is a new one you got from BestBuy.

Correct. I had the original that lost the ad min password then went to heck. Replaced it with the SATA with the model # in prev coorespondence. Had 2 SATA hard drives and both have the same issue - This one was purchased and installed on 8/2/10

Could be, one long method that worked once for a friend was to completely wipe the disk. You have to burn an ISO image to CD and run the program from the disk. It's called CopyWipe.

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads/copywipe.zip

Before running the program, remove all unnessary hardware like EXTRA sticks of Ram, TV tuners, USB devices and use only one hard drive, obviosuly the one you plan on installing Vista on.

It takes a long time to format but its worth a shot.

Once it formats the drive, remove CD and put in your Vista installation disc and proceed as you did before with now a CLEAN INSTALL. Don't make a partition just click next and install to the unallocated space.

Windows automatically will partition the drive for you.

Good Luck,
