Solved Web vid replay probs with Standard User

I've not given up on Richc..... and I'll keep on praying.

PS.,..Derek, clean install is just too drastic for such a glitch....I'll live with it for a while until Richc comes up with something.

BTW...could it be an inadverdently deleted dll?

I agree, my reinstall was for a fresh start, but it did fix the problem.

Richard wondered if it affected all new accounts. We really haven't tested that completely. Create a new Administrator account and login to that and see if it has the problem or not. Then we'll know if the issue is all new accounts or only new standard accounts (or perhaps only standard accounts).

I also suggest you boot into Safe Mode with Networking (not as an Administrator) and see if the problem exists there or if things are fine in Safe Mode.

I have made two new accounts, one as administrator from the start; the other as standard, later on changed to administrator...and neither one played the vid...in any type of account. I will now try safe mode with Networking.

Nope....Safe Mode with Networking does (or not does) the same: Standard account did not play the vid that the Administrator account played.

Meanwhile, because I could not turn on Real-time protection in safe mode, I might have acquired a malware. I was re-directed to an ad site when I restarted from safe mode to normal mode. I am now running a quick scan.

Now I just remember I had inadvertently turned on parental control...and quickly turned it off.....but not before I might have done stuffs I did not know to undo.

Hi Typo,

I sincerely doubt it has anything to do with parental controls, but here's an excellent tutorial on how to use them and turn them on and off for standard users: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/95139-parental-controls-setup-use.html. I'd provide more details, but I use Vista Business which does not include that feature and so I can't test anything.

Nope.....parental control on(with no restrictions) or off makes no diff.

Btw....I did get infected. I had to run MBAM to get back to normal.
Btw...what does Clear SSL state accomplish?

Hi Typo,

Glad to hear MBAM cleared up the problem.

Clear SSL State isn't the issue because it affects your ability to access SSL sites (which doesn't seem to be the problem here) and would apply to all accounts. But here's a more clear definition that while created for XP, applies for purposes of explanation to Vista as well from: Information About the Clear SSL State Option in Windows XP.

If you click Clear SSL State on the Content tab in the Internet Options dialog box, you can remove all client authentication certificates from the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) cache.

In an SSL session (using https://), when a server asks for a certificate to verify that you are who you say you are, the chosen certificate is saved in a cache. The chosen certificate can remain in the cache until you restart your computer. Clicking the Clear SSL State button removes all certificates from the cache without having to restart your computer.

I'm not sure what else to try short of a system repair/upgrade or a clean install at this point. I'm out of other ideas.

I am truly getting itchy to repair...but I hate to do all these uninstallings of programs that came factory installed that I had uninstalled already. And with HP...there are lots. So, I'll just sit this one out until one of you comes up with other ideas.

I understand your hesitation, just a little side note to add, next time you get your computer set up the way you like it and all is good, make an image and save yourself a lot of time.

I make regular images myself so I always have a previous safe working version I can fall back on in 20 or 30 minutes.

I called a professional computer service who told me flat out over the phone that my problem with some vid/pic viewing is not in my PC but is an unrecognized bug in website's programming of vid players and that's why it is encountered only in very limited few websites. They apparently programmed it using built in Administrator account and not realizing it has problems with a non-built in administrator account for everybody.,

He refused to come over or even tinker with my laptop if I brought it in...."Sir, you PC is fine. It does not need my service". "I do not want to take your money," was his final argument.

If only auto mechanics could be half as honorable.

The same player(flash) works very well in most sites in all accounts..including guest.

I am now noticing that even in same site, some vids/pics play and some don't...but they all play in Administrator account.

I encountered two blogs in same site: Joba Chamberlain: Change of Heart

CC changes tune on opt-out clause

One opens and the other does not...this time in both accounts.

So apparently, in some instances, vid or pic or blog viewing can be indiviually programmed (or bugged) to have this random problems.

It's nice to know my PC is just fine.

I found all other players(to check permission setting) but Flash. Where is it? Which folder? Which file?

I did a lot of tweakings and now I am totally normal again.

Well, nice work then! Congrats!

If you have a smooth running machine now I would suggest creating an image while all is good and should you have any problems in the future you can just roll back to an image of when things were good.

I just installed the latest Java 6/24 and the vid playback problem returned and I cannot fix it since I do not know how I fixed it earlier. Now it seems Java and flash player are interconnected.

Thing is, I re-installed the old Java and it did not solve the problem. I then unstalled and re-installed Adobe Flash ...with either the old and the new Java...and problem stays.
